Here are 5 reasons harm reduction is the best approach:

It saves lives through Naloxone distribution, syringe access, and overdose prevention sites.

It meets people where they’re at - without judgment, stigma, or shame.

It reduces disease and harm in our communities by lowering HIV and Hepatitis C rates and connecting people to care.

It’s evidence-based and saves money by preventing expensive health crises.

Harm reduction honors the rights and restores the dignity of people, shifting from punishment to care, compassion, and community. Treating people as people, not problems.

At Red Project, we believe everyone deserves compassion, dignity, and the tools to stay alive and well - and we don’t think that’s radical.

🌟 Transgender Day of Remembrance 🌟
Today, we pause, reflect, and honor the lives of transgender and gender-nonconforming people who were taken from us far too soon.

At Catskills Pride, we stand in solidarity with our trans community—today and every day. We remember their names, their stories, their joy, and the light they brought into the world. đŸ•Żïž

This day is not only about mourning, but also about recommitting ourselves to creating a community where every trans person feels seen, valued, affirmed, and safe.

✹ We honor. We remember. We uplift.
✹ We continue the work.

When you’re cold, you’re cold!

Repost

Sullivan County will be opening its two warming centers this Friday, November 21, in Liberty and Monticello:

- United Methodist Church, 170 North Main Street, Liberty
- St. John’s Episcopal Church, 15 St. John Street, Monticello

These facilities will remain open to anyone from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. every night through mid-April 2026.

“Despite our cold, sometimes snowy winters, having a warm, safe place to stay is not a universal experience here,” noted Sullivan County Health & Human Services Commissioner John Liddle. “The shortage of affordable and supportive housing inventory in the County, the increasing costs of living, and unexpected challenges continue to drive people to our warming centers. We welcome anyone who needs a place to stay for the night to come to either of these locations.”

Warming centers in Sullivan County exist to protect unsheltered individuals from the cold of the winter. Staff are experienced and trained in working with people who have complex and severe service needs.

“These locations offer people more than a place to sleep, and human service providers from across the County chip in to help those in need gain access to medical care and other social service benefits,” explained District 5 Legislator Cat Scott, chair of the Legislature’s Health & Human Services Committee. “Warming centers also give the vulnerable a place where they can feel safe. The Liberty warming center is directly across the street from the Village of Liberty police station, and once again the Monticello warming center will provide onsite security.”

Deputy Social Services Commissioner Giselle Steketee added, “We’re very fortunate to have such strong community partners. The teams at the United Methodist Church. St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Federation for the Homeless have been exceptionally reliable and supportive.”

Harm reduction is a journey - not a destination.

We know the safest option could be not using at all, but that’s not always the reality. Stopping suddenly, or going cold turkey from some substances - like alcohol or benzodiazepines (like Xanax) - can be extremely uncomfortable, painful, or even deadly.

That’s why harm reduction focuses on meeting people where they’re at and supporting every positive step toward safety, no matter how small. Whether that means calling the Never Use Alone Hotline, using with someone you trust, carrying Naloxone, or getting your substances checked - it all matters.

Every step toward safety saves lives. Harm reduction, no matter how small, makes a difference.

When you’re safe, you’re safe! Don’t let stigma stop you from accessing the tools that can reduce harm in your life. This applies to young and old and all in-between, but let’s especially reach and teach our youth. They’re our great (community) commodity ❀

Harm reduction isn’t just for substance use - it applies to s*x too!

Using tools like PrEP, PEP, condoms, l**e, talking about consent, and regular testing helps keep everyone safer and more informed. Because safer s*x is informed s*x!
