Healthcare Dive (9/13, Kelly ) reports “scheduling a new patient appointment with a physician takes 8% longer than it did in 2017 and 24% more time than it did in 2004, indicating a growing physician shortage in the U.S., according to a” survey from staffing agency AMN Healthcare that “tracked appointment wait times in five specialties: obstetrics/gynecology, cardiology, orthopedic surgery, dermatology and family medicine.” The survey “found the average wait for an appointment across 15 large metropolitan markets is 26 days, up from 24 days in 2017 and 21 days in 2004.”

Infants Born To People Stressed Out During Pregnancy May Be More Likely To Experience Social, Emotional, And Learning Problems As They Grow Up, Study Suggests
HealthDay (5/3, Mann) reports, “Babies born to women who are stressed out during pregnancy may be more likely to experience social, emotional and learning problems as they grow up,” investigators concluded in a study that “followed nearly 100 pregnant women and their babies for 18 months.” The study, which involved magnetic resonance imaging, revealed that “infants born to women who reported high stress levels showed brain changes in key areas of the developing brain, including the folds in the outer part of the brain (sulcal depth) and the left hippocampus, which is tasked with learning and memory,” and these children “were more likely to have trouble regulating their emotions and showed thinking impairments.” The findings were published online in JAMA Network Open.

Rates Of Some STDs Increased In US During First Year Of Pandemic, CDC Data Reveal
The Washington Post (4/12, Shepherd ) reports “the number of cases of some sexually transmitted diseases increased during the first year of the pandemic,” according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The data revealed “gonorrhea increased by 10 percent, and primary and secondary syphilis...increased by 7 percent from 2019 to 2020,” while congenital syphilis “hit a new high of 2,148 cases in 2020.” Overall, the US “recorded 2.4 million STD cases in 2020, according to the CDC report, slightly lower than the 2.6 million documented in 2019.”

The Washington Post (3/31, A1, Goldstein , Keating ) reports “pregnant people who are vaccinated against the coronavirus are nearly twice as likely to get covid-19 as those who are not pregnant, according to” an analysis by Epic Research. This “analysis, based on medical records of nearly 14 million U.S. patients...found that pregnant people who are vaccinated have the greatest risk of developing covid among a dozen medical states, including being an organ transplant recipient and having cancer.” Lung, “kidney, liver and blood disorders” also posed a slightly greater risk for breakthrough infection, the analysis revealed.
