The Rockdale Cemetery Association is created and organized for the benevolent purpose of caring for the graves of early settlers of Hopkins County, Texas and their descendants who are buried in the Rockdale Cemetery. The cemetery is at least 120 years old, with the first known burial taking place in 1891. The Association preserves, maintains and oversees the cemetery grounds and collects and manages the funds of the Association in furtherance of those purposes. All the properties and income of the Association are permanently and exclusively dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of the cemetery and not for financial gain to the Association or any of its members. The Association relies heavily on private donations as a source of income. The Association is governed by an elected Board of Trustees consisting of nine members serving three-year staggered terms. Three Trustees are elected each year at the annual meeting, which takes place on the first Sunday after Mother’s Day each year at the cemetery grounds.
