Trooper Anthony S. Godwin: March 22, 1989 – December 31, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce that our brother, Master Trooper Anthony S. Godwin (B540), passed away on Tuesday, December 31, while off duty.

Godwin graduated from the 129th Basic Highway Patrol School in November 2012 and was stationed in Troop B where he served in Cumberland, Brunswick and Columbus counties over the course of his career.

“On behalf of the Patrol family, I extend our heartfelt prayers and sympathies to the entire Godwin family as they cope during this tremendous loss,” said Colonel Freddy L. Johnson Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol. “It is our sincere honor to embrace Trooper Godwin’s legacy as we reflect on his selfless service to our state and the lasting memories he has created throughout the years.”

NCSHP members of Troop B who served alongside Trooper Godwin as well as the extended Patrol Family will stand ready to support the Godwin Family during this difficult time. Please join us in continued prayer for his wife, Heather, and son and daughter, Landry and Grayanna, respectively, along with his parents and extended family members & loved ones.

Funeral arrangements are as follows:

• Visitation – 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Beaverdam Original Freewill Baptist Church in Chadbourn, NC, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m.

Please keep Greensboro PD and Officer Horan’s family in your thoughts and prayers

Statement from Chief MJ Harris:

"Thank you for being here with us.

First, we want to honor the life and service of Officer Michael Horan, who was killed in the line of duty this morning.

Together, we are mourning Officer Horan -- who was a husband, father, son, friend, and much more to his family. He became a sworn officer with the department in early 2018, and he served on the Patrol Bureau in District 4, on Squad A.

Officer Horan was hired in September of 2017 to start the 103 PBIC Academy. He was an excellent officer. He had an outstanding reputation inside the Department and the community. We ask that you please keep his family, friends and fellow officers in your thoughts and prayers.

Officer Horan responded to a call about a man with a firearm inside Food Lion in the 4700 block of Lawndale Drive. A shooting occurred inside the store at approximately 11 a.m., fatally wounding Officer Horan. The circumstances of what led to the shooting are being investigated.

The offender is in custody and there is no threat to the public. We will release more details about the suspect as the investigation continues.
Our department has requested the State Bureau of Investigation to be the lead investigating agency.

On behalf of the Greensboro Police Department, we want to thank our law enforcement partners across the state for your support and for your efforts today to quickly apprehend the suspect.

We also want to thank our community for continuing to support our officers and their families during this difficult time. We will be sharing more information with media after this news conference with details about a fundraiser for the officer’s family, and other ways in which we plan to honor Officer Horan’s life and service."

A memorial has been set up in his honor at police HQ. One will be located outside and the other in the main lobby.

On Friday, October 11, the McDowell County EOC will be closing. On Thursday evening the mobile kitchen will pack up and head home where it will be cleaned up and made ready for its next mobilization.

NCTA cannot express the proper amount of gratitude we have for everyone who volunteered their time or those who donated financially to provide hot meals to all of the first responders deployed to assist out west to help the residents of western North Carolina in this their greatest time of need. While there is still a long-term need for continued meal distribution, the NC Emergency Management is taking over this role as most of the first responders are now spread out over a vast territory and it is much more efficient to cater meals directly to them than have a central location set up.

The Association would like to send a very special Thank You to members of the North Carolina FOP, First Sergeant Bobby Lineberger and Trooper Stephen Parker for being deployed with the kitchen throughout this entire mission. There are too many volunteers to list individually as we surely would miss some, but we would like to thank all of the young high school students that showed up every day to volunteer. Seeing our youth step up to assist put a smile on a lot of tired faces when they came in to eat.

Again, THANK YOU to Everyone that assisted with this mission. Your support makes this possible!!
