Town of Summerfield Awarded $500,000 for Bandera Farms Park Trails
Summerfield, NC – The Town of Summerfield has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources as part of the state’s Great Trails State Program. This funding will support the development of multi-use trails at Bandera Farms Park, including a key segment of the Piedmont Greenway and equestrian trails.
The grant is part of a larger statewide effort to expand and improve trail infrastructure across North Carolina. The Great Trails State Program, created by the General Assembly in 2023, provides matching grants to support local trail projects that promote tourism, health, and economic development. Summerfield was one of only 79 projects statewide selected for funding out of 89 applications.
“Trails bring outstanding benefits to both urban and rural communities, boosting tourism and economic development,” said Pamela B. Cashwell, secretary of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. “This generous funding, made possible by the N.C. General Assembly, will help transform the state trails system in the Great Trails State.”
Bandera Farms Park is a 115-acre site jointly owned by the Town of Summerfield, City of Greensboro, and Guilford County. The planned trails will connect to regional greenways and accommodate hikers, bikers, and equestrian users, offering a unique recreational experience in northwest Guilford County.
The grant requires local matching funds, which the town has committed to through partnerships and previous park planning efforts. The park is expected to open in November 2026.
