Doris Fields, Lady D, is a nationally celebrated R&B, soul, jazz and blues singer-songwriter from West Virginia. She is known for her powerful vocals, dynamic performances, and contributions to the state’s music culture. Her professional career of over two decades has included performances with her own band, original musical works, and opening for other famous bands and dignitaries. She has authored a stage play, "The Lady and the Empress", based on the musical legend Bessie Smith. She has authored a book of poetry, Appalachian BluesSpeaks and more recently is very successful in painting and creating visual arts. “Recognized as West Virginia’s First Lady of Soul, Lady D continues to inspire through her music, mentorship, and community involvement. Her work preserves the state’s rich musical heritage while promoting the blues, jazz, and soul traditions to new generations.” says the WVU History Center. Nicholas Performing Arts is so pleased to introduce her to the residents of Nicholas and surrounding counties. Lady D will be presenting the life and music of Bessie Smith, the widely renowned Jazz Age “Empress of the Blues”; the most popular blues singer of the 1930’s in her original play, "The Lady and the Empress."Take a walk back in time and treat your mom, as Lady D performs at the Historic Old Main stage on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2026 from 4:00-6:00.
