Toenail fungus can be difficult to treat but not impossible!

Medicines that are applied topically (directly to the nail) can be cost effective but they require daily application for 1-1.5 years. They are only about 35% effective but they don't have any effect on your organs so they are a safe alternative.

Oral medication is taken daily for 90 days and is about 80% effective. It can also tax the liver so it requires multiple rounds of blood work. While it is cost effective and most people that take it see improvement in their nails, it is not safe for everyone.

Laser nail therapy can be slightly more effective than the oral medication, it is very safe and only requires a single treatment that takes less than an hour. The catch? It is not nearly as cost effective as the alternatives. This treatment costs $1,100 for both feet.

A patient came in for a Medical Pedicure with new deep tissue injuries to his feet and toes but he didn't know it until I pointed it out. During his exam, his neuropathy was found to have worsened so he couldn't feel the damage occurring in his feet.

This was a great reminder of the importance of seeing a Podiatrist regularly, especially if you are diabetic. A Medical Pedicure not only makes your feet look and feel great but it gives our Podiatrist the opportunity to examine your feet regularly and provide treatment if necessary. It's a win win!
