🎉 This week, we are celebrating two very special milestones at Summerville Medical Center: the one-year anniversary of opening our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and NICU Nurse Week!

One year ago, we proudly opened our Level III NICU — bringing advanced, life-saving care closer to home for our community’s tiniest patients. In just one year, our NICU team has cared for hundreds of babies, providing around-the-clock expertise, compassion, and hope to families during some of their most challenging moments.

❤️ To our incredible NICU nurses — thank you for the extraordinary dedication, skill, and love you bring to every baby you care for. You are the heart of our NICU, and we are so grateful to celebrate you this week. ❤️

We are deeply grateful to our entire incredible NICU team including physicians, respiratory therapists, and support staff who make this care possible every day. Thank you for your dedication to ensuring every baby gets the best possible start in life.

Here’s to many more years of helping our smallest patients grow stronger, healthier, and ready to go home. 🍼✨

Today we had the privilege of attending the Industry Appreciation Luncheon hosted by the
Summerville Chamber of Commerce, where the focus was on one of the most critical missions for organizations today: recruiting and retaining great talent.

Special thanks to Heather Grier, Director of Talent Acquisition for HCA Healthcare South Atlantic Division, for sharing valuable insights on today’s panel, alongside Torre Mason, Senior HR Manager at Walmart Distribution Center, and Taylor Weyl, HR Director at Sportsman Boats. The discussion was expertly moderated by Miranda Craig, Regional VP for the SC Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

From insightful conversations to meaningful connections, it’s clear our region is deeply committed to building a thriving workforce and celebrating the people who make it all possible. Huge thanks to the Chamber for bringing us together and spotlighting the incredible work being done across industries.

Sunday Wellness | No one likes to talk about colorectal cancer. But if you’re 45 or older, experts recommend that you get regular screenings. Start with these screening guidelines from Sarah Cannon, the Cancer Institute of HCA Healthcare – our larger health network.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States (excluding skin cancers), according to the American Cancer Society. In its early stages, colorectal cancer often has no symptoms – that’s why screening is so important.

Schedule an appointment to learn more about the importance of screenings and your risk for colon cancer from colorectal surgeon Dr. Susan Knoche: https://summervillecolorectalsurgery.com/.

✨ A Wonderful Evening with Our Chamber Community ✨

We had a fantastic night hosting the Summerville Chamber of Commerce and local business leaders at Summerville Medical Center for the Chamber’s Business After Hours event.

We’re proud to support our community and elected officials as they work to make Summerville a better place to live, work, and raise families. As a tax-paying entity, Summerville Medical Center and Trident Health contributed more than $53 million in taxes in 2024—funds that help put more first responders, police officers, and firefighters on our streets, improve county infrastructure, and support educators in our schools.

Thank you to the Chamber for an evening filled with laughter, meaningful conversations, and a shared commitment to serving the Dorchester County community. Events like these remind us how strong partnerships help us grow and better support the people we care for every day.

Meet Gena Martin: Bariatric Patient and Nurse at Summerville Medical Center

As a nurse at Summerville Medical Center’s Ambulatory Care Center, Gena Martin knew the importance of good health—but struggled with her own. “I was slower, had less energy, and it was tough being on my feet all shift,” she shares.

That’s when she turned to Dr. Michael “Logan” Rawlins and the team at Coastal Carolina Bariatric and Surgical Center. With their support, Gena began a life-changing journey.

Before surgery, Gena weighed 273 pounds. Today, she’s down over 75 pounds—and up in energy, confidence, and health. “I go to the gym four times a week, I’m never short of breath, and my blood pressure is phenomenal. I’ve completely changed mentally and can focus better on myself.”
