U.S. Army veteran Eric Barnes was used to leading teams to tackle big jobs. But his abdominal and back pain took him off the field and to colorectal surgeon Dr. Susan Knoche for care.

In his words, "You can tell when there's a good team or a poor team. These are total professionals with Dr. Knoche and her office staff, and at Summerville Medical Center. I couldn't have asked for better care. The good lord blessed me a lot by bringing me into their circle to get the help I needed."

🌟 Gold Star Employee of the Month: congratulations to Tammy Roberts, RN in the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC)!

Tammy was nominated by a colleague, who said: "Tammy is the nurse in the background that keeps us running. You never see her because she never sits down. She is the one restocking, requesting refills, coming in to assist while getting patients ready for surgery. She does this every day nonstop. She is loved by all of the staff and keeps us cohesive. She is an amazing nurse and I am so lucky to get to work with her.”

Thank you, Tammy, for the exemplary care you provide every day for our colleagues, patients and community.

Meet our NICU Team: DeAnna Danley, RN

After starting her career in EMS and in the Emergency Room at Summerville Medical Center, DeAnna gave birth to two children. Both of her children were patients in Summerville Medical Center’s Nursery and seeing the care and love they received inspired her to switch from Emergency Medicine to Neonatal Care.

“Every day we need see new houses and families coming in, and they are all having babies. Being a Level III NICU allows us to provide a higher level of quality care for our families here at home.”

Good Catch Award | Congratulations to Brooke Fiorenza with the Lab for receiving the Good Catch Award!

The Good Catch Award is awarded to teammates to recognize their efforts promoting quality and patient safety. Recently Brooke identified a patient that had been admitted to the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) without an ID band on. Brooke quickly stopped the line to ensure the patient was properly identified and ID band placed before patient care was completed.

Thank you for your commitment to patient safety!

🔥 ATHLETES IN EXTREME HEAT 🔥

As we continue through the summer, elevated temperatures can be dangerous for those exposed for extended periods of time - specifically student athletes and utility/construction workers. Let’s talk about how to handle the heat!

For our athletes and those working outdoors:
💧 You must hydrate with electrolytes before, during, and after physical activity performed in the elements
💪🏾 Powdered electrolytes or electrolyte replacement drinks are highly recommended
⏰ Please plan frequent breaks (every 20-30 minutes) during workouts and conditioning performed in the elements
🌡️ Please monitor the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature
🧢 Coaches, please refer to state/high school guidelines regarding appropriate practice regimens during extreme heat
🏈 Please follow guidelines stating:
•what temps still allow for outdoor workouts
•what temps prohibit any protective gear, such as pads and helmets
•what temps dictate whether you can hold practice at all

We are excited as our community gears up for another year of sports seasons; however, PLEASE be mindful of temperatures and the wellbeing of all our athletes! 🎉

🌟 Gold Star Employee of the Month: congratulations to Jess Cyr, RN in Labor & Delivery

We are thrilled to recognize Jess for the Gold Star Employee of the Month Award for the outstanding care she provides our patients. She was nominated by a patient "Jess is hands down one of the best nurses I've ever met! She was incredibly knowledgeable and thorough in her assessments of me and my baby, which really put me at ease. She went above and beyond to provide outstanding care during my labor experience. My epidural didn't work properly at first and I began to panic, she sat with me and encouraged me until it did kick in. She made me feel validated, supported and safe. I don't have enough words to say how great she is!"

Thank you, Jess, for the exemplary care you provide every day for our colleagues, patients and community.
