March is National Nutrition Month and this year’s theme celebrated how Food Connects Us.
“Food is a connecting factor for many of us. Food connects us to our cultures, our families and our friends. Sharing a meal is an opportunity to learn about its preparation, who made it and where the ingredients were sourced. Health, memories, traditions, seasons and access can all impact our relationship with food. While these factors influence the foods we eat, the foods we eat also affect our health.” – Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
Each month, our Assisted Living and Independent Living residents attend a nutrition class hosted by the Registered Dietitian. Many topics are reviewed from vitamins/minerals, hydration, adequate protein intake, heart health, and diabetes management. Each class is usually paired with trying a new food item along with a lecture that ends with an activity. This month our residents partook in a wonderful discussion about how food has connected them, how food has influenced family traditions, and how they can better connect with their food each day. Of course, the lesson ended with some trivia about foods from all around the world and they were also able to try General Tso’s Tofu and marinated Bok Choy.
We are lucky to have our wonderful dining services staff provide residents and staff with delicious and balanced meals here at the Village.
