Will AAC stop them from talking?
This is one of the biggest myths in speech therapy — and it’s simply not true. 💬✨
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) does NOT prevent verbal speech. Research consistently shows the opposite: AAC supports and often increases spoken language.
Here’s why:
When a child has a reliable way to express their wants and needs, their frustration decreases, their confidence increases, and their brain gets repeated models of meaningful language. AAC gives them access to vocabulary, sentence structure, and social connection — all of which build the foundation for verbal speech.
Language is the goal. Speech is just one way to get there.
When we give a child AAC, we are not “giving up” on speech.
We are giving them a voice.
And sometimes, when the pressure to speak is removed… speech begins to grow. 🌱
