Mermaid is a favorite amongst almost everyone! 😍 But it is probably the exercise most often rushed through and incorrectly performed in a group setting. In the first slide you can see a common mermaid flow we use in class sped up, and if you swipe left you can see the exercise broken down. Here are a few tips to not only perfect your mermaid, but to get the most out of it:

✨try keeping your pelvis level during the first part of mermaid (if you have trouble with this you might be lacking some hip mobility, specially internal rotation)
✨focus on lengthening the spine, sitting tall and then side bending through the spine keeping the pelvis level
✨As your rotate towards the foot bar during the second part, try to square your shoulders off to your bar and work on getting your shoulders level
✨ Instead of rounding and collapsing into the second part of mermaid, keep your shoulders and arms 'active' by pressing the palms of the hands down into the bar and opening through your chest and collarbones (if you find this part difficult you might be lacking in spinal rotation and also hip mobility)
✨ finish your mermaid with a counter stretch by again sitting tall and sidebending in the opposite direction and rotating through the spine. If you are unable to sit with your pelvis and hips level this might not feel the best! In which case you can modify by removing the leg closer to the shoulder blocks and allowing it to drape off the side of the reformer. This would allow you to focus on the mobility in the spine.

Taking your time with your mermaid allows you to focus and feel the movement throughout your spine and hips. 🧜‍♀️
