Dear Summit EMS Members,
It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Paul Vickery—one of the greatest among us—passed away last night.
Paul was a cornerstone of this organization for over 30 years. I first met him 47 years ago, and as I raised my own children, almost every story I told them of my time at the Squad somehow had Paul woven into it. He played many roles in those stories: the comic relief with an impeccably placed curse word; the intimidating figure with a too-large flashlight looming behind me; the getaway driver; the mentor; the salesman; the father figure; and the smooth talker.
In reality, Paul’s roles were even more significant. As a Life Member, he led us through nearly every possible position, serving as President, Captain, Trustee, and various Lieutenant roles. His vision for our future was perhaps most evident in his work as Co-Chair of the New Building Committee, a challenging and daunting task we tackled together, helping to secure the home we operate out of today.
Even his professional life was intertwined with our mission. Through Paul D. Vickery Ambulance Sales, he provided the Squad with multiple Braun ambulances over the years, ensuring we had the best equipment to serve our neighbors. Many of you will also remember his deep love for EMS history; he was a fixture at the Memorial Day Parade and the 4th of July field, proudly displaying his antique ambulances for the community to admire.
During the 9/11 attacks, Paul’s generosity and leadership were unparalleled. He coordinated additional fleet support and loaned a command trailer from his business to serve as a sanctuary for counselors and volunteers during our longest hours.
The Squad was a true family affair for Paul. He met and married his beloved wife, Dr. Donna Rothschild Vickery—also a Life Member and our former Medical Advisor—through the Squad.
More than anything else, Paul embodied the ethos of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” While he wore many hats, the greatest role he ever played was that of “friend.” Everyone who met Paul loved him; he was a friend to everyone, and he was one of my dearest friends. I will miss him terribly.
We will share details regarding services and arrangements as they become available. Please keep Donna, Ian, Claire, and the entire Vickery family in your thoughts.
In Sympathy,
Carl Ganger
