When someone brings fossils to our club, it’s sometimes insulting because a few of us are already old enough to fit into that classification. But seriously, folks, our neighboring town, Ruskin, is a treasure trove of fossils. In fact, the greatest discovery of Pleistocene fossils ever found is here. And a must-see: The Paleo Preserve Fossil Museum with fossils, photos, and newspaper articles from the famous Leisey Shell Pit discovery of 1983. The museum is inside and part of the Camp Bayou Nature Preserve in Ruskin at 4140 24th St SE. Our guests today, Barry O’Shaughnessy and Patty Moore, are huge volunteers for both, and they’re always looking for others to pitch in. It’s Florida history right here in South County. Educational and fun. (813) 641-8545. Make it a part of your weekend here in Rotary District 6890.

About 85% of American households have a working washing machine.
But across the world, only 70% of households enjoy this common appliance.
What about in our own backyard?
Recently, our director of projects Ann Hammond discovered a family, a very large family, with no washing machine and no money.

As a Rotarian, she responded as you might think.

Over the weekend there was a special delivery at this home.

And a song of praise from the recipient, a grandmother who takes care of so many kids.

At Rotary we just want to do good in the world. That’s all.

Do you really need a four-year degree? Melissa Canfield has several degrees she doesn’t use. But her love of cars drove her to open “Grease Monkey” car repair shops, and now she’s having fun. Her concern is that youngsters are pursuing a four-year degree they may not use, and it may not prepare them for a job anyway. Therefore, there are fewer skilled workers and jobs unfilled. And sometimes, gargantuan student debt. Why not learn a trade? Steady income, job security, opportunities to advance.
“We want to build careers, not just jobs,” she says. Certainly worth a thought. Our club focuses on vocational scholarships so this presentation landed on fertile ground.

When someone asks you what you most desire, what is your answer? To Rotarians, one of the answers is peace. Peace in our home, our neighborhood, our state — in the whole world.
Rotary and Gannon University in Ruskin joined forces to install a “peace pole” right out in front of Gannon to support peace efforts everywhere. Rotary International recently opened a peace center in the Middle East, where it is certainly needed. Thanks to PDG Chevon Baccus for her local leadership.
Gannon students placed flags of the nations around the pole. May it impact hearts for years to come.

Belinda Smith Lawson of Riverview is an avid gardener and says about 60% of US households do some type of gardening, and most of them raise food. Simply put, she says it’s fun, it’s exercise and it allows you to use your creativity. Shrubs, perennials, succulents, some annuals - they can all be raised in containers, which is perfect for condo and apartment dwellers limited on space. What a great hobby! Instagram:

Estate planning is something everyone ultimately should consider. Today’s speaker at Rotary, Catherine Day Hult, left no stone unturned in explaining what can go right and what can go wrong with estate planning. What you do can mess you up for sure, but doing nothing is almost always a mistake as well. A will, a power of attorney, a health care power of attorney, a living will, HIPPA authorization and in some cases a trust— should all be in the conversation.
Great info today from Catherine. Contact her at (727) 686-3459. legaltalk820@gmail.com

It’s sometimes frustrating to deal with medical care. Juggling doctor’s offices, getting medications, fighting with insurance companies; sometimes you have to be an expert just to survive. Literally.
Some folks just decide to pay more. And for that, they get a higher level of attention and less stress. That’s what physicians assistant Nate Bevan and his wife, nurse practicioner Jamie, offer. Their company: Apollo Beach Concierge, (813) 528-3434.
Nate says they come to your home whenever needed. They call in prescriptions, help make appointments, and are on call day and night. Basically, customized, personal service. The cost? $375 monthly per person. For chronic care, $625 monthly. Always good to hear new approaches to staying healthy.

Hundreds poured into community hall for the annual South Shore community health fair which featured several doctors giving mini- lectures, 40 health related exhibitors, free food from HCA Florida South Shore and entertainment all morning. Exhibitors’ fees will provide scholarships to college bound seniors graduating from Lennard and East Bay high schools. Much thanks to all who participated and a special thank you to our local hospital, a good neighbor, HCA Florida South Shore here in

There is not a lot of crime in Sun City Center, not your typical crime. HOWEVER, our seniors are victims of scams. Fraud. SCC Blvd is 2.2 miles long, with 19 banks. Scammers know that. They call you pretending to be a relative, a person in need, even Publisher’s Clearing House. They talk you into giving them money and over time, the victims because addicted to being a victim, and they lie to their friends, families and financial counselors in order to give money away. Who can explain the psychology of that? Hillsborough County Master Deputy Jeff Merry explained what’s happening: Emotional manipulation. Whether using fear, compassion or greed, the bad guys are so talented and persuasive , and so technologically skilled, they have amazingly sneaky ways of getting you to willingly hand over your money. It’s terrifying.
Be careful.
Thank you to Deputy Merry for another of his informative, timely visits here in .

Who likes snakes? To David Osborn of Wimauma, they’re a hobby. He hunts them
and catches them, (but doesn’t kill them) and actually enjoys meeting some of the types we all hope to avoid. In Florida, that means Eastern Diamondback Rattler, Eastern Coral, Southern Copperhead, Pygmy Rattler, and Timber rattler. Osborn says snakes are an important part of the ecosystem, but have a bad reputation, partially because in Florida we have about 300 snake bites per year. His advice: avoid stepping on them and don’t reach your hand into some of their favorite hiding places like woodpiles, under porches and decks, and tall grass. He says Florida climate wise is like Jurassic Park, so be aware!
Educational presentation today from former engineer David Osborn here in !

It may not be at the top of your list when you shop for emergency supplies, but buying a “ham” radio could save your life. Much has changed with this pastime over the decades. It’s now viewed by some as indispensable in a time of emergency. If your power goes out. If you’re injured and your phone is down. If you need water or food. Pick up a relatively inexpensive hand held and get help immediately.
Joel Bahl is president of the Sun City Center Amateur Radio Club (813) 642-2071, and has been enjoying ham radio since he was in his teens. About 800 south county residents are using ham radios and their focus, beyond fun and fellowship, is looking out for each other. His club meets the first Wednesday of every month. They’re hobbyists but also have become smarter technologically. What’s it cost to get started? As little as $20 for a radio. But it can go higher! Thanks Joel for a great presentation here in !

It alway scares me when someone comes to the club and makes us move around. Easier to be lazy! But decidedly unhealthy. Ashley Trinklein, co-founder of In Home Senior Fitness, does just what the company name suggests. She comes to YOUR home, to help
make you healthier. Can’t beat that. Check it out, and we were tickled to meet her today in Rotary
