Help send graduating high school students to college!

“EREY” means “Every Rotarian Every Year.”
Any club whose members give at least $25 a year to the Rotary Foundation receives this recognition and this year 8 of the clubs in our district are EREY clubs.
It’s a goal every year here in Sun City Center, honored by !

Europe…Asia…Africa…and yes, North America, are all places where “Cruise Planners” promotes river cruises.
They are usually smaller ships, and whether you are seeking romance, a family friendly experience, luxury, or just relaxation, it’s likely available.
Our “cruise man” in Rotary is Matt Gordon
(717) 856-2646, who says he does this because it’s his passion. He had grown tired of the grind of the corporate world. Now he sells fun.
He and his wife Marji Beam are independent franchise owners.
No toll free number. No long queue to get someone on the phone. Local folks. In our community. And because he’s a Rotarian, we know the mantra he follows…”Service Above Self.”
Rotarians doing business with Rotarians.
that’s our style as we seek a better life for everyone here in !

The goodness of hearts changes lives. Walmart shoppers today providing hundreds and hundreds of pounds of food for the needy. Rice, beans whatever is needed, it all is collected by pantries on the same day. Another Rotary service project and one that literally feeds the hungry and in the process gives hope to those who need it most. Thanks to Walmart, thanks to Rotarians, to Interact students from nearby Lennard high school, who gave their Saturday, and mostly thanks to the shoppers who in difficult times of high inflation found a few dollars and in some cases much more, to stock the shelves of six local pantries. It’s part of life as a Rotarian here in !

“Usually when the missions are successful, no one ever hears about it.”
Retired special forces operator Ruben De Leon Sr. of Ruskin gave us some behind the scenes insight today into the U.S. Army, and explained the differences between what happens in the movies and what happens in real life. Surveillance is a key, he said. Hi-tech communications technology also factors in.
Allying with partner forces “in country” is sometimes necessary. And often, he said, special forces are secretly operating well before actual conflict breaks out. He gave Viet Nam as an example.
The entertainment he says most accurately portrays reality? The American TV series “The Unit” from 2006-2009.
Ruben holds an audience. Aside from
his speaking skills and knowledge, you immediately know you are hearing the truth from someone with authority.
Much thanks to Ruben for dropping by here at

Plenty of us from SCC here tonight with more than 200 others celebrating the giving to Rotary and its projects all over the world. Rotary International fights disease such as polio and promotes women and children, clean water and sanitation, the environment, education, strong economies and peace.
Arm in arm all over the world, this army of do-gooders only wants one thing: to make the world a better place.
Keynote tonight was former International RI President Barry Rassin. Amazing speaker!
We are but one district encompassing four Florida counties, but our hearts are passionate about our causes. Congrats to for its good work all year and tonight’s much deserved annual foundation gala.

Another milestone reached today as past-president and assistant governor Connie Huber is recognized for earning another Paul Harris fellow. Club foundation Chair Doug Roderick presided, a weekly clarion for this effort, whose proceeds fight disease while promoting peace, the environment, strong economies, women and children, clean water and sanitation, and education.
Thanks Connie and to all of those who help here in !

Possibly the most perfect charity on the planet. District Foundation Chair Ed Odom blessed us today with a visit to further this great cause, and we are always ready to hear that message. Rotary with 1.4 million members and 45,000 clubs, fights disease, promotes peace, education, the environment, women and children and economic development.
A Rotarian for 30+ years, major donor and PDG, Ed put in simplest terms the various ways to donate to this charity, which spends at least 93 cents on the dollar on the given cause. Also on hand, the DG who takes over July 1, Linda Johnson, hoping to help us find a new SCC president for July as well.
Champions trying to train more champions.
It’s a pleasure serving here in !

Halloween is behind us now, but what frightens children all year is the risk of being removed from their homes because it’s unsafe there. They need safety, but it’s still scary for them. And often they leave home quite suddenly with only what’s on their backs.
That’s why the Interfaith Social Action Council of Sun City Center uses its resources to address the needs of foster children.
Here we have Rotary Project Chair Ann Hammond and Club President Steve Overton receiving a grant for $4,000 from the Council to support the “Bear Necessities for Foster Kids” project. Now in its second year, this project provides much needed day-to-day clothing for foster kids. Rotary partners with the Hillsborough County Guardian Ad Litem 13th District with its host of volunteers to pull this off. As one Guardian Ad Litem spokesperson said, they are doing this “To show the children that someone cares about them during a very chaotic time.”
Promoting the welfare of children. A great cause for Rotary and The Hillsborough Guardian Ad Litem’s office, and thanks in part to the Interfaith Social Action Council, which for some 55 years has been promoting the welfare of all residents of greater Sun City Center. Thank you, ISAC of SCC, all part of our !

Knowledge begets more knowledge, and also, power.*
At Rotary we are open to new ideas and new approaches to any subject, especially how to manage taxes. Our CPA Jeffrey Kurtz of Gibsonton, (813) 708-6438, showed us today how to properly, legally file our returns while taking advantage of any appropriate deductions or credits.
* What do you do with that power? Simple. Good in the world. Join us at Freedom Plaza Tuesdays at noon as we work to make greater Sun City Center - better here in

Bobby Howard of Ruskin was a veteran and long time sheriff’s deputy but tragically died shortly after a motorcycle accident in the summer of 2023.
In his memory, his fiance then, Kacey Sedita created the Robert L. Howard Foundation to fund scholarships and summer camp opportunities for low income and military kids because Bobby was so dedicated to local youth.
Kacey and her new husband Mike shared this sweet cause with us. Rotarians love meeting others who are doing good in the world here in !
