November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month, and I want to use this occasion educate and encourage all individuals with diabetes to get a yearly eye exam. Simply put, high blood sugar can cause swelling in the blood vessels of the retina, retinal hemorrhages, and blood vessel abnormalities. These conditions can lead to decreased vision and even blindness. The good news is that if detected early, this eye disease called Diabetic Retinopathy, can be treated to help maintain vision and stop the progression of vision loss. Please watch this short video produced by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and hear from actual patients on the importance of annual eye examinations.

Why Are My Eyes Burning?!
Dry eye can occur when your eyes are not making enough tears. Patients ask, “How can my eyes be dry if they water so much?” The answer is our eyes water to make up for the lack of proper tear film production.
When we blink, our eyes create a tear film made up of 3 layers, which helps keep our eyes moist and clean. When one or more of these layers does not produce enough tears, eyes become dry. Symptoms include blurriness, vision fluctuations, burning, stinging, and a gritty feeling in the eyes. Crustiness in the eyes upon wakening sometimes occurs. Environment and activities can also play a role in dry eye. Extensive reading or computer time can lead to dry eye because we tend to blink less.
What can you do to relieve your dry eye symptoms? First and foremost, make sure your eyes stay lubricated. Artificial Tear products are beneficial when used consistently.
Secondly, clean the pores along the upper and lower eyelashes regularly. This helps reduce build up which can clog pores that create the tear film. Eye lid scrubs, Q-tips and warm water, or warm compresses 10-15 minutes a day are effective in cleaning the glands and keeping the natural tear oils flowing.

Cataracts 101

A cataract forms when proteins degenerate and break down in the lens of the eye. The lens protein break-down causes the lens to become hazy and cloudy, making it more difficult to see through. A good analogy is when the head lights on a car become opaque over time and the light shining through becomes dimmer.
A question many people ask is what causes cataracts? Normal aging is one of the most common reasons cataracts form. Other causes that can speed the progression of cataracts include diabetes, eye injury, lack of UV protection, or if someone is taking steroid medication.
Symptoms that a person with cataracts may experience are difficulty with night vision, sensitivity to light, glare, difficulty reading and having colors appear washed out.
If you notice a gradual change or decrease in your vision, or you feel that you are not seeing as clearly as you used to, cataracts could be the cause. It is important to have an annual dilated eye examination to stay ahead of your eye health, and diagnose any issues affecting your vision, like cataracts, and to rule out the presence of macular degeneration.

Sometimes a bump on or near the eyelid is just a benign growth. It may hinder your vision or distract from your appearance, but it is not harmful. A growth that changes size, shape or color over time, could be cancerous and dangerous to your health if left untreated. It can be hard to tell which lesions are malignant and which are benign, so it is important to get checked out by a physician. Dermatologists are usually thought of first for diagnosing and treating skin cancer. When the lesion is close to or on the eyelid, dermatologists and other surgeons will often refer you to an oculoplastic surgeon, such as myself. An oculoplastic surgeon is an eye doctor who is specially trained in eyelid plastic surgery. Cancerous lesions are surgical removed, usually in an outpaitent facility, where the tissue can be examined by a pathologist to ensure that all the cancer has been removed. If you have concerns about a growth on or near your eyelid, contact our office at 623-977-9000 for an evaluation.
