Newborn Movement Assessment

Newborn Movement Assessment The Evaluation and Stimulation of an Infant’s Developmental Movements

The Newborn Movement Assessment intends to give parents and professionals the opportunity to assess an infant’s movements from birth throughout their first year of life. Presently, there are medical and genetic tests to assist, coordinate, and direct an infant’s doctors and nurses in order to identify current and potential health concerns. In contrast, the Newborn Movement Assessment™ introduces a

n effective comprehensive guide to determine short-term and long-term developmental concerns, and also optimize, and stimulate the baby’s movement patterns through gentle touch. The Newborn Movement Assessment™ is a tool for assessing any baby’s typical or atypical birth experience.

Unveiling the Secrets of Infant Movement: Gravitational Primitive Reflexes - the missing link to understanding primitive reflexes.

Delve into the groundbreaking world of Gravitational Primitive Reflexes – a revolutionary concept pioneered by Michelle Turner of Movement Lesson. Explore how these automated responses to gravity shape a baby's physical and cognitive development, from breathing to walking.

Discover how the 8 essential Gravitational Primitive Reflexes, identified through Michelle's innovative rotational stimulation techniques, pave the way for optimal growth and cognitive advancement.

Learn about:
The Fetal Neutral Reflex - the foundation for in-utero growth.
The Breathing Reflex - establishing the body's ability to resist gravity and facilitating neurological integration.
The Absolute Horizon Reflex - regulating gravity's influence for spatial awareness.
The Coming off the Floor and Coming to the Floor Reflexes - crucial for weight transfer, transitional movements, and interacting with the environment.
The Falling Reflex - impacting vertical movements and vestibular development.
The Upside Down Reflex - combining vertical and horizontal responses with momentum.
The Hanging Reflex - showcasing a baby's ability to engage and hang from another person.

Understanding these reflexes empowers parents and professionals with crucial assessment tools, enabling early identification and intervention for enhanced infant development.

Join Michelle Turner, presenting at the Movement, Brain, and Cognition Conference at Charles University, on a journey to unlock the mysteries of infant movement and witness how these insights can transform the way we approach early childhood development.

The Establishment and Identification of Gravitational Primitive Reflexes in Infants Michelle M Turner Movement Lesson

Objective: A reflex is automated response to a particular stimulant through our central nervous system. Gravity, a non-optional force and our greatest stimuli, present from the birth until death. The human body must cycle through various functions and positions to establish our body’s relationship to gravity’s involvement, from breath to locomotion. Currently, it is assumed that our primitive reflexes are involuntary motor responses originating in the brainstem present after birth in early child development that facilitate survival (1). Here, we introduce the Gravitational Primitive Reflexes, necessary for proper development

Methods: Using rotational stimulation to guide movement, we introduce the body’s system to movement as a function of gravity. This rotational relationship with gravity is universal in all living organisms.

Results: We have identified eight Gravitational Primitive Reflexes, critical to the progression of milestones and cognitive development. In utero, the Fetal Neutral Reflex allows for body growth in all directions in a frictionless environment. During birth, the Breathing Reflex establishes the body’s ability to oppose gravity, essential for neurological integration. The Absolute Horizon Reflex, establishes the regulatory functions regulation of gravity through the epidermis to articulate movements for spatial awareness. The Coming off the Floor Reflex establishes a baby’s availability to interact driven by weight transfer and transitional movements in coordination with primitive reflexes to coordinate moving away from the floor. The Coming to the Floor Reflex is a necessary action as an infant learns to come to the floor from another position in their environment. The Falling Reflex has significant vestibular impact on vertical movements as a baby is not organized to fall at birth. A body is capable of succumbing to gravity yet it does not organize to do so. The Upside Down Reflex, transfers vertical and horizontal responses in combination with momentum in a significant process of invention. Infant development is complete with the Hanging Reflex, their availability to engage in a hang from another person.

Conclusion: The recognition and identification of infant-based Gravitational Primitive Reflexes are essential assessment tools needed to allow parents and professionals access into key assessment tools to identify and impact Early Infant Development.

Early Action is Key: Don't Wait for a Cerebral Palsy CP Diagnosis

If your child shows signs of Cerebral Palsy (CP), acting as if they have it, even before a formal diagnosis, can make a world of difference. Waiting for a diagnosis before starting therapy or developmental interventions can hinder progress. Proactive Parenting includes early intervention. Understanding optimal development is essential, as a child's brain is most adaptable in the early months.

The Importance of Movement Evaluation:

Regardless of the diagnosis, thoroughly evaluating a child's movement structures is crucial. This includes assessing their:
* Vision: How their eyes follow, track, and coordinate with their body
* Fine Motor Skills: Breathing, spine, hand (arms), and feet (legs) movements
* Gross Motor Skills: Larger movements like moving their body, milestone accomplishments with time-dictated development reviews, that can include rolling over, independent sitting, and crawling.

Overall Structure: Skeletal and muscular alignment, eyes, body and midlines. Any issues within these areas can lead to developmental deviations, whether or not CP is present.

Counteracting CP with Movement:

CP often leads to compensatory movement patterns, where the body finds alternative ways to move due to challenges with vision, fine and gross motor skills, and their body’s structure, that include muscle tone and control. To address this, children with

CP needs intentional input and experience with the basic forces of movement. Your infant needs to experience the following skills to experience optimal development:
* Weight Transfer: Shifting weight from one body part to another.
* Transitional Skills: Moving between different positions (e.g., tummy to rolling over, sitting into all-fours).
* Rotational Movements: Twisting and turning of their body to move. There is not one milestone that can be experienced without rotational movements.

By helping children experience these movements, we can help them gain:
* Midline Development: Awareness of the body's center line crucial for core movement coordination.
* Crossing Midline: The ability to reach across the body, essential for going from horizontal development to vertical milestones needed for progress in their daily activities and functions.
* Rotational Midline: Twisting movements, important for core movement and functional coordination.

Functional Movement and Milestones: Achieving age-appropriate skills in time-dictated development that will lead to crawling, walking, and playing.

Remember: Proactive parenting for early stimulation help you to be able to focus on movements are crucial for your child’s optimal development, with or without a CP diagnosis. By providing targeted movement experiences, you can help your child develop the skills they need to thrive. Don't hesitate to continue to seek guidance from your professionals but at the same time work on your child’s monthly milestones for a personalized plan for your child's needs.

The Bottom Line: Acting early and prioritizing movement, development, and vision, can significantly impact your child's developmental trajectory, especially for those with potential CP. Empower yourself with knowledge and take proactive steps to support your child's journey toward optimal movement and independence. We are here to help you every step of the way.

Newborn Movement Assessment

Free! Master Series

It's the first step, not only to help your baby, but to know how they are ready to move. Do they need a help? Have they been through birth trauma? Was their birth without a concern? Just because your baby is cute and sweet doesn't mean they are OK. What actually is OK? The best gift you can give your child is movement. The best thing you can do for all baby's is to be certified in the Newborn Movement Assessment NMA.

From February 1-3 - you will have free access and a private Facebook group to my Masters Series Class! https://www.movementlesson.academy/free-nma
