When you have trauma, a healthy relationship doesn’t feel like a clean beginning. It feels like everything that never got resolved is suddenly asking for your attention. The patterns return. The fear gets loud. The softness feels suspicious. You may even start to question whether you’re capable of receiving what you’ve always said you wanted.

This is not a sign that the relationship is wrong. It’s a sign that it’s working. When your nervous system finally gets enough support to stop bracing, it begins to unearth what it never had time or space to process. What’s surfacing is not new. It’s just finally allowed to be felt.

Secure functioning means both people know how to stay present when this happens. They understand that conflict is not collapse, that needs are not burdens, and that repair is possible when both people are committed to protecting the connection they share. The relationship becomes a place where survival patterns are gently interrupted. It becomes a space where new experiences of safety are built slowly, through consistency, presence, and care.

Healing inside a relationship doesn’t always feel peaceful. Sometimes it feels disorienting. Sometimes it feels like loss. But with the right foundation, it becomes a process your body can learn to trust.

If we haven’t met yet — hi, I’m Kathy.

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the person behind Serendipity Psychotherapy.

I specialize in trauma-based couples therapy and work closely with both individuals and couples to support trauma recovery and build secure, healthy relationships. I also work with clients navigating faith transitions, religious trauma, and the process of deconstructing from high-demand religious systems. Supporting first-generation women and couples is a big part of my heart and my work, and I bring a culturally sensitive lens to every session.

Outside the therapy room, I’m passionate about making mental health more accessible through psychoeducation on social media. I also serve as a research assistant for the , where we study relationships across adolescence through developmental and psychological frameworks.

Therapy with me is relational, strategic, and change-focused. We don’t just talk about it — we shift it. I work best with folks who are ready to engage, open to being gently challenged, and committed to doing the work.

If that sounds like you, and you’re located in Arizona or open to traveling here, I invite you to explore my website and fill out my contact form to get started!

Thank you for being here. Let’s move toward security together!

Sometimes, good decisions do not feel good. Sometimes, right decisions do not feel right. Sometimes, the right thing is the hard thing, not the thing that feels relieving or inspiring or uplifting.

Sometimes the right decision comes with a lot of grief and a tremendous sense of loss. Not everything that is right will feel that way, which is confusing, frustrating, and painful.

Choosing the right thing when it’s the hard thing takes maturity, courage, and self activation. If you’ve been struggling with feeling hard feelings while making right choices, I see you. I hear you. I am you. You are in good company.

Long term satisfaction over instant gratification. We can do it. 🫶
