For those of you who know me well know that I don't have the fondest memories of my mom from my childhood. There are two things I always look back upon with the best of memories. The first is her blasting Please Don't Bury Me by John Prine to wake me up for school. The second is one of my favorite meals, grits, toast, over easy eggs, and canned corned beef hash. Last night I recreated a vegan version of it. The music was easy. The food was fairly spot on. It wouldn't fool anyone in a side by side taste test but for a meal I thought I had said good bye to years ago, I'm very happy!

Thanks for reminding me that balance is also important and for a fun date night ! Thanks for the great dinner !

This is the face of someone happy to have been able to run but glad he has returned from the run!

I took some more time off since my last post. My hip and back certainly felt better but I wasn't sure I was ready. Today marks two consecutive running days. Not sans discomfort but certainly reduced discomfort. I'm hoping this maintains and marks the beginning of my return.

Honesty! July 25th of 2021 I completed . It was a brutal race for me. About a week and a half prior was my last serious training session, and if I'm being honest I trained poorly for that race. Six weeks later I did with very little training in between and that was really the last of my training for the year. In the end of October I ran about 18 mi as part of a team at and ran surprisingly strong. Mid November I ran the and mid December I ran the 25K at the in TN. It was a big year for me but post Lake Placid my training was nearly nonexistent. I took a lot more time off, gained weight, lost fitness, and became pretty down on myself. However, after registering for for 2022 I started to train again, my hip and shoulder disagreed. I had been neglecting injuries for too long. I had to be honest with myself and the truth was that I didn't want to poorly train and injure myself further just to gain another medal. I've proven to myself that I can suffer and endure pain in order to persevere through a long race, it's what I do best. What I haven't proven is that I can take a step back, repair myself, and train well. So I did. I deferred Cozumel to 2023. I started working on the injuries, a little. I'm just now starting to run again. I'm slow, out of shape, 25lbs heavier, but with much less pain. It's not gone but it's better. There's more work to do, a lot more work to do, but it's a start! Honesty!

It’s not uncommon for me, or other athletes, to find themselves in a funk after a large race. My experience post has not failed to deliver on that. In fact, it has delivered stronger than in years past. It has taken me 4 days to put this into words and it still may be premature.

Did I have the race I wanted? No. I wanted a new PR and I came up far short. Maybe that was an unrealistic goal after 6 weeks before.

What did I accomplish? I arrived at the start line healthy and ready to race. I also finished. I finished an Ironman for the 4th time and I finished faster than I did 6 weeks prior. Those are huge and I am happy I was able to accomplish those goals. I also completed two Ironmans in one season. That is something that has been on my list for awhile.

Where was I not successful? My on course nutrition still needs work. This caused some GI issues and lead to a weak run. I arrived late to the start line and thus got stuck in a slower pack of swimmers. Not such a big deal. I had a lot of trouble getting my legs to cooperate for the first 30 miles of the bike. That’s never happened before and I’m not sure what I did wrong. Mostly, I forgot to take it in. I forgot to enjoy myself. I forgot that what I was participating in was a privilege and I was lucky to be out there doing what I love. I forgot that every single person that was out there cheering and volunteering was there in some way to help me, to help all 2000 of us. I was polite and thankful to those that I spoke with but I certainly did not internalize that gratitude like I have in the past.

I will continue to train! I will continue to try and better my performance! I will race Ironman again but this time I’ll remember to take it all in!

Thank you to everyone who cheered me on, both in person and virtually! The biggest thanks goes out to my incredibly supportive and amazing wife ! She is, and always will be, the most amazing person I have ever known. I am so incredibly lucky to be married to a person like her!

Taper for is officially here. It’s a time to rest and panic about every last race detail. I’m trying my best not to focus on the what ifs and instead focus on the positives. This is my training grounds. I get to swim in a clean lake with no motor traffic. I get to look at and bike in these bluffs and run these trails. I’m fortunate to be able to do what I love period, let alone in such an amazing environment.

Yesterday was a super tough day out on the course. I did a lot right, I made some mistakes, and I learned a lot. However, I can say that I left everything I had last night out on the course. Thank you to every last one of you for your encouragement and kind words! Thank you to every volunteer and helper out on the course that made yesterday possible! Most importantly, thank you to my amazing wife, for everything she does to allows me to do what I do! She waits for hours in heat, sub zero temps, rain, and snow. Her support not only makes these endeavors possible but means more to me than she could ever understand.
