We would like to welcome our new clinician Marissa!
Marissa Varney is a Licensed Social Worker and Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor experienced in working with adults and adolescents. She graduated with her masters of social work and bachelor’s in social work from the Ohio State University. She has experience working with adults in the inpatient psychiatric hospitals and crisis care settings experiencing mental illness and substance use disorders. Marissa has experience working with adolescents and has extensive knowledge working with children with developmental disabilities. She is in the process of becoming a certified yoga instructor. Marissa enjoys outdoor adventures with her family and working in her garden.

Sometimes it can help to breakdown emotions in order to manage them… for example if you want to decrease your anxiety you would need to solve for the feeling of uncertainty or powerlessness … so if you were anxious about a test then you could study more (take power over the situation) to get a better grade (feel more certain of the outcome)

A fantasy bond is a defense mechanism we form to create an illusion of safety and security in our relationships. Fantasizing connection and closeness helps us to compensate or substitute for neglect or a sense of disconnection in our early childhood. We merge or create an illusion of being at one with another in our imagination to relieve anxiety, fears, and uncomfortable feelings. ⁠⠀

As adults, we form fantasy bonds to help us feel safe, protected, and connected. It is often an unconscious process where we imagine we are loved and fantasize that we are with someone who loves us and won’t leave us. We also imagine or fantasize our partner to be who we wish them to be, rather than who they actually are. This fulfills a compulsion to relive the past in new relationships. ⁠⠀

Fantasy bonds are a substitute for vulnerability and closeness. Many times we will have fears of intimacy while also having fears of being alone. We are afraid of loss & hurt and want to protect ourselves, so we revert to a fantasy bond.⁠⠀

If you’re struggling with depression, it can feel like you are in a dark hole with no windows and no way out.

You feel hopeless and life may feel meaningless. You lose your sense of self as you lose connection with your values, interests, hobbies and passions.

One of the most devastating affects of depression is that it wipes your ability to remember times that you were happy and fulfilled.

It’s like a black fog that has descended on you. It not only shapes your current sense of the world but also infiltrates your memories.

You lost the ability to day dream and can’t imagine it getting better.

Connecting with others, bring out experiences with mental health issues and depression is a way we can shine light on the darkness and empower each other to keep moving forward... out of the dark and into the light.

Depending on your relationship with your family you may need form boundaries or you can compromise more.

Remember, boundaries are meant to teach people how they can treat you, but they are not meant to control or change others.
