American Red Cross vs. American Heart Association. What is the difference? While both provide life-saving skills based on the same scientific consensus, the primary differences lie in their target audience, standards, industry recognition, and renewal time. If you are needing certification make sure you choose the correct one.

Are you a Coach?⚽️🏀🏈⚾️🥎🏐🏉🤼‍♂️🏊🏻🤸🏻‍♂️ The American Heart Association (AHA) is critical for sports coaches, providing essential CPR/AED training and emergency action planning to handle sudden cardiac arrest, which can affect athletes of all levels. AHA certification empowers coaches to act as first responders, doubling or tripling survival rates through immediate, life-saving care.
Key Aspects of AHA Importance for Coaches:
Life-Saving Certification (CPR/AED): Coaches are often first on the scene, making AHA CPR and AED training crucial to act quickly, as immediate intervention can significantly increase survival chances for cardiac arrest.
Risk Management and Safety: Intense physical activity can trigger undiagnosed heart conditions, making trained coaches vital for safeguarding athlete health during, practices, and games.
Emergency Action Planning: The AHA works to ensure teams have proper emergency plans and equipment, including AED availability at venues, in collaboration with initiatives like the Smart Heart Sports Coalition.
Preventive Education: Coaches can learn to recognize signs of distress and understand risks like heat-related injuries.
Community Health Advocacy: The AHA engages coaches as community leaders in fundraising and health awareness, such as through the Heart Walk.
For coaches, being AHA-certified is not just a safety requirement but a vital responsibility to ensure a safe environment for their athletes.

What are Feedback devices & why do we use them? Since January 31, 2019, the American Heart Association (AHA) requires that all AHA courses teaching adult CPR skills use an instrumented directive feedback device or manikin. This mandatory requirement, which applies to BLS, ACLS, and Heartsaver courses, ensures real-time, objective, and audio-visual feedback on compression rate and depth.
Key Requirements and Details
Mandatory Scope: The requirement applies to all adult CPR training, with future, increasing requirements for child and infant courses.
What Must Be Measured: Devices must monitor, at a minimum, the rate and depth of chest compressions.
Feedback Type: The device must provide real-time audio or visual (or both) feedback to the learner, allowing for immediate correction.
- The compression depth feedback device is a clicking mechanism pre-installed in the Prestan Pro Series Manikins (please note: this does not include the Prestan Ultralite Series). This device may also be referred to as a “Clicker” due to the audible “clicking” sound it makes when the compressions reach a depth of 2” (Adult).

-The compression rate feedback device is a LED light mechanism that signals through a series of lights indicating whether CPR chest compressions are being delivered at the appropriate rate. This device may also be referred to as a “monitor” or a “rate monitor”. The “Rate Monitor” comes in various sizes and quantities for your convenience. It would be beneficial to note (again...) that not all Prestan Pro Series Manikins come with the rate monitor. However, it can easily be installed. What does it do and where is it at?
The “clicker” is located in the chest plate area under the manikin’s skin. You and your students will hear a “clicking” noise every time the compression reaches the proper depth recommend by the AHA. The clicker mechanism comes in the Prestan Professional Series Adult, Child, and Infant manikins.
The “monitor” is located in the upper left-hand shoulder of the Prestan Professional Adult and Child manikin and in the diaper area of the Infant manikin. Prior to your class, I recommend you review the lighting system to ensure proper training.

Benefits Of CPR Training In The Workplace
CPR training can be a lifesaving skill when used properly at work.

Every year, more than 350,000 instances of cardiac arrest occur outside U.S. hospitals, according to the American Heart Association. These medical emergencies can occur anywhere from private homes and business premises to public institutions, and even while commuting via car, bus or train. A company’s greatest asset is undoubtedly its employees. This is why employers need to do everything in their power to create a happy and safe working environment. While having an efficient human resources department will undoubtedly contribute towards a constructive workplace, investing in CPR and general first aid training for employees can be equally as beneficial. Indeed, there are numerous benefits to providing emergency training to the workforce.

Learn to spot the signs … the AED signs. Do you know where it is in your workplace? School? Church? Gym? Where you spend the most time? An AED (which stands for automated external defibrillator) delivers a shock that can restart a heart in cardiac arrest. In public places, AEDs are usually found on a wall near an entrance or elevator. Look for AED in big, bold letters and the red heart with a lightning bolt through it.

If you see a teen or adult collapse, call 911, start CPR and send someone to find the AED.
