To carb or not to carb? 🧐 That is the question.
So many people are AFRAID of eating carbs. I see it all the time in my clinic! It’s the most polarizing food question, hands down. 🤯
LISTEN UP: Most Americans eat WAY too many refined carbs. No doubt. 🍩 Refined carbs spike your insulin and over time, make you insulin resistant. That leads to issues like diabetes. 📉
BUT the real question is: Do we need to avoid complex carbs?
The answer is a HARD NO. 🙅♀️
Many of your organs run on glucose, which comes from carbs. When you severely cut carbs, your body freaks out. It makes its own sugar from protein and other things in a process called gluconeogenesis.
How? By elevating stress hormones! 😬 Your body is making its own sugar, but it's inefficient and super stressful on your system. Plus, you risk losing muscle mass! 💪 (Protein can’t be stored!)
So, give your body the carbs it needs! Complex carbs can be stored as glycogen in your muscles and liver for energy. This is called “Protein-Sparing.” It keeps your metabolism happy and helps you hold onto your lean tissue.
Carbs are fuel! They're only "bad" if your body can't use them. 🔥
Pro Tip: I tell my patients to eat a big breakfast and front-load their complex carbs. ☀️ After hours of sleeping, your body will store most of those carbs as glycogen to use all day long, keeping your stress levels low!
The Bottom Line:
Refined Carbs ➡️ Hurt your metabolism (think: DAMPNESS in TCM).
Complex Carbs ➡️ Benefit your metabolism (think: DRAINS dampness in TCM).
They are NOT the same! 🙅♂️
