Army veteran Matthew Melancon, one of the first elective double amputees, travels from Utah to San Diego each year for specialized prosthetics that help him stay active. With long days of appointments, he finds peace and strength at the Camp Pendleton Fisher House.

“Having my own space to recharge makes all the difference,” says Matt. “It gives me the strength to keep going.”

In 2011, Matt’s life changed after an IED explosion in Afghanistan. After struggling with pain management and limb salvage, he chose amputation which gave him freedom he never expected.

Now, with support from Fisher House, Matt and his wife, Alexa, can enjoy time together while he focuses on his recovery. “The calm and community here help me reset and keep moving forward,” says Matt.

Fisher House is a vital part of his journey providing the space and support he needs to continue living life to the fullest.
