A 345kV gas circuit was operating normally by all conventional measures. Temperature readings were stable. Oil analysis showed no concerning trends. Yet, the bushing was slowly degrading, generating a small amount of that was going unnoticed. What prevented a major failure came down to one thing, continuous partial discharge .

We will be presenting at CIGRE Korea, opening the discussion on how Electronic Temperature Monitors can evolve from life-protection tools into carbon instruments for the energy transition.

Transformers sit at the heart of every power system, and temperature has long been the universal metric for monitoring their health. But there is a missing link- how transformer temperature relates to the operational carbon footprint.

When it comes to operational carbon footprint calculation, there’s a big gap:

👉 Current methods typically estimate a transformer’s footprint using nameplate losses or fixed assumptions.
👉 In reality, operational footprint varies dynamically with load, temperature, and cooling actions.
👉 This means today’s reporting often under- or over-estimates the true CO₂ impact of transformers in service.

This is where ETMs play a critical role. ETMs create a pathway to accurate, real-time carbon measurement at the transformer level. By integrating ETMs with sustainability goals, end users can:

👉 Enable lifecycle cost analysis and carbon footprint calculation.
👉Assess annual energy loss and cost impact.
👉 Identify overloading or underloading issues
👉 Support replacement decisions (e.g., with higher-efficiency units)
