Please join us on Sunday, July 6th for our first hands-on CPR and First Aid certification class designed for parents, caregivers, and anyone who wants to feel more prepared to help in an emergency! Taught by a certified Red Cross instructor in a supportive environment at the SFP office in Suttons Bay, the class will last approximately 3.5-4 hours and is appropriate for teens and adults, and motivated and mature pre-teens (great for babysitters!). Best practices for starting solids, advancing solids, baby-led weaning, picky eating, mealtime tips to set you up for success at all ages! There will be plenty of time for your questions. I’m very excited to be hosting Ashley Fetters, pediatric speech-language pathologist, feeding expert, clinical lactation counselor, and owner of Northern Pediatric Therapy, for a free event on Monday, May 19 from 6 to 7 pm.

In Ashley’s words: Join us for an evening of fun and new adventures as we explore the world of food and feeding skills. From the first bite to successful meal time routines, we will provide guideance for all ages and stages of feeding. Meal times can be stressful but they don’t have to be! Help your little eater learn to explore new foods in positive ways.

Friends - I am so excited about this! More details forthcoming (and exact time TBD), but we will be hosting the wonderful Ashley Fetters (a pediatric speech-language pathologist, certified lactation counselor, and overall infant and child feeding expert) from Northern Pediatric Therapy on Monday, May 19. This will be a free event open to the community, not just SFP families. Ashley will be talking about the early feeding journey with infants and children - how to approach early feeding/food introduction, and setting the stage for positive skills and routines around eating and meals throughout childhood. This will have something for everybody, including parents of younger infants just getting started with solids, and parents of older kids who might be facing some picky eating and aren’t sure the best way to handle it. More details coming soon, but wanted to share this ASAP so that you can pencil it in if you’re interested!

One of my very favorite things in the world is student theater – there is something about the enthusiasm and earnest expression of feeling that just gets me every time and gives me so much hope for the future. Two of my girls are in Leland‘s production of Oliver this spring, which opens tonight! The Suttons Bay schools are performing 13: The Musical in May, and I’m not up-to-date on the lineup for other local schools, but I’m sure they also have great things in the store. So, just a plug to come out and support these kids and enjoy some wonderful performances! (Tickets for Oliver can be found at Leland-theater-department.square.site)

New date/time for our monthly movement/mindfulness group led by the amazing Laura Piskor! You don’t have to be an SFP patient to join us. With soccer season getting underway for many kids, we’ll be shifting to the second Sunday or each month starting at 1 pm. The first half hour is yoga (for kids age 3-8 and a parent/caregiver) and the second half hour is coffee/tea/snack and playing/community/conversation! Okay, I’m at the phase of life where things like this are the pinnacle of excitement for me now 😂. We recently purchased a fancy vision screening device for SFP and I’m so happy to have this tool at hand now for screening all our patients - including babies as young as 6 months - for both refractive errors (like nearsightedness) and for eye misalignment (think lazy eye/strabismus). The machine is an autorefractor that takes complex measurements of the eyes, and then evaluates the results based on age-appropriate standards and lets you know if a child’s results warrant referral for a complete eye exam. I love a good old-fashioned physical exam, but this is an awesome piece of technology that helps us pick up more subtle issues that can go on to cause pretty severe long-term vision problems, and it takes less than a minute! Michigan has some new car seat laws going into effect next month, and I’m very happy about it because these are backed by solid evidence and will reduce the risk of serious injury and death for children in the event of an accident. If you didn’t know, one of SFP’s two amazing nurse practitioners, Becky, is a certified child passenger safety technician, so feel free to reach out to us with any car seat questions!
