February is National Heart Month – a month to bring awareness to heart disease (the leading cause of death in the United States). Show your heart some love and care by following these heart-healthy tips:

• Choose Healthy Fats and Oils – Swap butter for olive oil, choose avocados, and enjoy nuts or seeds to get heart-friendly fats.
• Avoid Processed, Refined Carbs and Sugars – Limit sugary drinks, white bread, and pastries. Opt for whole grains and naturally sweet fruits.
• Low Sodium Diet – Reduce salt intake by reading food labels, cooking at home, and flavoring meals with herbs and spices.
• Increase Fiber Intake – Incorporate more fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains into your meals.
• Regular Exercise (150 mins a week) – Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days of the week for a stronger, healthier heart.
• Limit Smoking and Alcohol – Quit or reduce smoking, and drink alcohol in moderation (or not at all) to support cardiovascular health.
