If you suck on a straw with nothing on the other end, do you swallow air?

If you hit a pocket of a thick milk shake do you start to swallow air?

The number one reason I see babies refusing the breast after starting bottles is the instant gratification from the bottle. We must allow the imitation of working for the letdown when using a bottle if we want smooth transitions back and forth from breast to bottle.

Clothing choices matter.

Can you tell the difference in what I would and wouldn’t pick?

Oral restrictions (tongue and lip ties) can cause feeding difficulties. That doesn’t mean all feeding difficulties are because of ties. And if a tie IS the root cause, it’s never as simple as just doing a procedure. But deciding whether your baby needs that procedure is a big deal.

To truly determine whether your baby would benefit from a frenectomy, it’s imperative to look at the whole picture. A true assessment includes looking at baby’s primitive reflexes, body symmetry, tension, strength, nervous system, feeding mechanics, and oral function. And if breastfeeding, looking at the dyad as a whole.

So if you’ve been told your baby doesn’t have ties, or that they only have a small tie (spoiler alert: those don’t exist) but continue to have challenges, you deserve a true assessment.

What has your experience been?

Get your finger or a teether in there. Play with their lips, cheeks, and get that tongue moving.

This can help wake up baby’s mouth and get some coordination going which gets baby ready to do their best work while feeding.

Try and let me know what you think.
