About a year ago I came across an article about salt deficiencies in horses. One of the main signs is a lack of top-line. A second sign is wood chewing. So, I took it upon myself to pay attention to horses while working on them over this past year to see if I saw that this is true. To say the least I absolutely saw a correlation. This is a different article, but it offers valuable information.
Sweating from work, or heat and humidity increases a horse's need for salt. It also increases the need for other electrolytes, such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
