As part of National Rural Health Day, Sweeny Community Hospital today announced it has earned a 2025 Performance Leadership Award for excellence in Quality. Compiled by The Chartis Center for Rural Health, the Performance Leadership Awards program recognizes top quartile performance (i.e., 75th percentile or above) among rural hospitals in Quality, Outcomes, and/or Patient Perspective.

“We are elated to receive this award for quality. At SCH, we strive daily to provide quality and cost-effective healthcare services to our community. To receive this award is very special and I am proud of the members that have pushed to achieve it.” Kelly Park, CEO, stated.

The Performance Leadership Awards program is based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®, a comprehensive and objective framework for assessing how rural hospitals are performing. INDEX benchmarks are relied upon by rural hospitals, health systems with rural footprints, hospital associations, and state offices of rural health to measure performance across multiple areas impacting hospital operations and finance.

“The areas of quality, outcomes, and patient perspective are cornerstones of healthcare delivery across rural America, and this year’s Performance Leadership Award recipients are establishing a standard of excellence for their rural peers to follow,” said Michael Topchik, Executive Director, Chartis Center for Rural Health. “We are delighted to shine a spotlight on such strong performance and honor the achievement of these hospitals on National Rural Health Day.”

Sweeny High School National Honor Society 16th Annual Bulldogs for a Cure raised $3,000 for the Sweeny Community Hospital Development Foundation's Mammo Project. Bulldogs for a Cure features specially curated shirts sold throughout the community to help raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Every 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is vital in survival rates. The Mammo Project assists patients financially in obtaining mammograms and other related diagnostics.

"We are so grateful for Sweeny High School National Honor Society to choose the Mammo Project for their donation again this year. This is a large donation that allows us to continue helping our patients with the financial burden they face uncertainty,” said Kari Schroeter, Executive Director of the Sweeny Community Hospital Development Foundation.

"On behalf of the National Honor Society, I'd like to thank the school district, the hospital employees, and community members for their continued support of our Dogs for a Cure project each year. It is a blessing to help make a difference in the lives of those in our community. The NHS Dogs for a Cure service project started with the Class of 2010 NHS officers in the fall of 2009 and has been a continued commitment of service by each group after for 16 years." stated Christi Wesley, National Honor Society Advisor.
