The Town of Sweetser mourns the loss of Deputy Marshal Sam Fowler, who passed away surrounded by loved ones. Sam was more than an officer—he was a true friend, a dedicated public servant, and a steadfast presence in our community.

His impact on the Sweetser Police Department and the people he served will never be forgotten. Sam’s memory will live on in the continued service of those who wear the badge, and in the many lives he touched with kindness, integrity, and compassion.

We ask that you keep the Fowler family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

🚨Meet Chief Clayton Thomason! 🚨

Clayton has been with Grant County EMS for 6 Years! With the recent move of Ambulance 12 to Sweetser, Clayton has taken on the role as Unit Chief of Ambulance 12. Clayton has truly taken Ambulance 12 under his wing and has built it up to where it is today!

1. What’s one thing about EMS that many people would be surprised to learn?
“Many people are surprised to learn that it’s not easy to become “just an EMT” or an “ambulance driver.” EMS requires extensive and ongoing education regardless of your certification level. Another key point is that Basic Life Support (BLS) should always come before Advanced Life Support (ALS)—something that’s often overlooked.”

2. What’s the most rewarding and most challenging part of being in EMS or serving as Chief?
“The most rewarding part of EMS is having the opportunity to help someone on their worst day and potentially save a life when all other options have failed. On the other hand, one of the greatest challenges is going home after responding to a traumatic scene—especially when those images replay every time you close your eyes.”

3. What would you say to someone considering volunteering?
“Do it! Volunteering with an EMS department is incredibly rewarding. It offers a unique sense of purpose and allows you to make a real difference in your community.”

Clayton continues to build Ambulance 12 seeking new recruits! Clayton has played a vital role in starting this ambulance in Sweetser! Thank you Chief Thomason for dedicating your time to the citizens of Sweetser and Grant county!
