Hello, all of you amazing parents! I have been testing Pediatric patients attending school here at Sweetwater Hospital for 2 months from all over the area, and have had no positives! This is a good indication that the schools and our kids have been staying careful and compliant with masking and sanitizing, and staying home if they are ill. I am confident that we can send our kids back to school and still stay safe! Please read my previous posting on recommendations for staying safe and hygienic for yourselves, our elderly community, and our beautiful babies. Also, don't hesitate to call anytime for details.

Back to school with COVID: Here are some recommendations I have with consideration of CDC guidelines:
1. Encourage your child to wear a mask while at school
2. Provide hand sanitizer for use before, between and after classes
3. Bleach wipes to wipe down your child's desk prior to sitting in it
4. Assigned seating if possible (may need to suggest this to teacher)
5. COVID testing for anyone with fever and symptoms--available at the office. May need to stay home until test comes back negative. This is usually within 24-48 hours with our current test. If the test is positive, student will need to contact school nurse and follow specific guidelines regarding on-line classes and return to school. Would recommend retesting in 2-3 weeks after initial test.
6. When your child comes home, allow them to leave all belongings, including clothing worn on that day, in a spot close to the outside of your home, or in a utility area. Keep a separate bin for their clothes, and keep their backpack away from the inside of the house. Keep shoes outside. Wash their clothes when you get a load in hot water, separate from everyone else's. Take homework and backpack materials out and keep them separate from the backpack until completed and placed back in. Use hand sanitizer before and after handling their stuff. Sounds excessive, but it's the older folks in the house that are at higher risk for severe infection from COVID, not your child!
7. If possible, get a FLU vaccine this year. It would be awful to catch both viruses at the same time, and not be vaccinated for either!!
8. Feel free to contact us for other questions or suggestions, good luck, and Happy Schooling!!

Several studies regarding Covid-19 and transmission between children and adults have been released recently. It seems, after reviewing the research, that younger children are at lower risk of becoming ill from the virus, as well as transmitting it. The risk for adolescents, however, is apparently higher for both. As we decide whether or not to send our kids to school and how to protect them, please consider communicating with your school officials regarding the need for PPE and personal hand sanitizer. I would recommend that middle and high school kids wear masks at school, practice social distancing while at lunch or outside, and sit in the same seat for every class, every day. After each class, the kids should wipe down their desks with Clorox wipes for the next student coming in. Please respond with additional ideas.
