Preparing for Upcoming Storms: What You Need to Know

As we brace for potential severe weather in the next 48 hours, uncertainty looms over what may come. However, certain conditions indicate that we should all be on high alert. Here’s what you need to know to prepare effectively.

Current Weather Conditions

We’ve been experiencing an extended drought, which has weakened the health of shallow-rooted trees in our area, particularly Virginia and yellow pines. These trees are more vulnerable due to their lack of moisture and compromised root systems. Recently, we’ve had just enough rain to saturate the surface layer of soil, but this has created additional risks.
With the ground already saturated, any additional rainfall will largely result in stormwater runoff rather than soaking into the ground. This scenario can lead to increased flooding and sewer overflows, compounding the risks associated with the upcoming storms.

The Coming Storm

Adding to the precarious situation, the remnants of a hurricane are forecasted to move directly over our area as it tracks northward. This combination of saturated soils and high winds creates a “perfect storm” scenario:
• High Precipitation Rates: Expect significant rainfall, which can quickly overwhelm drainage systems.
• Widespread Winds: The potential for strong winds could lead to downed trees and power lines, posing risks to safety and property.

How to Prepare

Given these conditions, here are essential steps to ensure your safety and preparedness:
1. Stay Informed: Regularly check reliable weather sources for updates. Stay tuned to local news channels and weather apps for real-time alerts.
2. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Ensure your emergency kit is stocked with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, and a first aid kit. Don’t forget any necessary medications.
3. Secure Your Property: Trim any weakened trees or branches that could fall during high winds. Move patio furniture and other outdoor items inside to prevent them from becoming projectiles.
4. Develop an Emergency Plan: Discuss your emergency plan with family members. Know where to go if you need to evacuate and keep important documents in a waterproof container.
5. Plan for Long Power Outages: Charge all electronic devices and consider investing in a portable charger. If you rely on medical equipment, have a backup plan in place (this includes those on oxygen and life- saving devices).
6. Stay Indoors During the Storm: During the storm, stay indoors and away from windows. Monitor local updates and follow instructions from emergency services.

After the Storm

Once the storm has passed, carefully assess any damage. If you encounter downed power lines or flooding, report these hazards immediately to our outage line--423-745-3131. We kindly ask that you report your outage through this line UNLESS you have very specific information to give. We cannot give estimated times of completion because we simply don’t know. Our crews will work through the list as quickly as they possibly can.
