Some weight loss drugs, particularly those containing semaglutide (like Ozempic and Wegovy), have been linked to a rare eye condition called nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition can cause sudden and irreversible vision loss. Additionally, rapid changes in blood sugar caused by these drugs can temporarily blur vision, especially in older patients.
While the risk of NAION is relatively low, it's crucial to be aware of the potential side effects and seek immediate medical attention if experiencing vision changes.
More research is needed to understand the exact mechanisms by which these drugs may contribute to NAION and to better manage potential vision complications.
*If you are currently taking any of the weight loss drugs make sure your optometrist is aware. If you are considering taking any of these drugs, make sure you have a discussion with your doctor concerning any potential vision loss.
