📌 Stuck on Speech – Literally! 😂👂🧠

Sometimes speech therapy gets a little sticky… and a whole lot of silly!
Today’s lesson? Engage, connect, and have FUN while learning 🧩💬

This little guy and I were working on /k/ and /g/ sounds—and what better way to boost participation than a suction cup toy to the forehead and a goofy face or two? 🤪🎯

Because let’s be honest: speech progress sticks when kids feel safe, seen, and supported 💙

📣 Speech Tip Tuesday

🌟 “Why does my child say ‘tat’ instead of ‘cat’?” 🌟

This is a common pattern called fronting—when children replace back sounds like /k/ and /g/ with front sounds like /t/ and /d/. So “cat” becomes “tat,” and “go” might sound like “do.”

🧠 It’s developmentally typical for toddlers, but by age 3, kids usually start using those back sounds correctly.

Here are 3 tips to help:

1️⃣ Try animal sounds like “roar,” “quack,” and “meow” to make back sounds more fun.
2️⃣ Use a mirror to show how the tongue goes up in the back for “k.”
3️⃣ Emphasize the sound: “That’s a cat — c-c-cat!”

If it continues past age 3 or your child gets frustrated being misunderstood, we’re here to help with a simple screening or fun therapy tools!

✨ When Participation Is Hard: Supporting Your Child Through the Tough Moments ✨

Sometimes, your child may come to therapy—or even just the dinner table—and participation feels really hard. That’s okay. 💛

Whether it’s sensory overwhelm, difficulty with transitions, or simply an off day (we all have them!), here are a few gentle strategies to help support your child when engagement is tough:

👀 Observe, don’t pressure. Step back and notice why your child might be disengaging. Are they tired? Overstimulated? Confused? Sometimes space is more powerful than prompts.

💬 Offer choices. Giving your child a sense of control can be a game-changer. “Do you want to build blocks or play with the farm?” → both meet language goals!

🎯 Start small. If full participation is too much, aim for connection first. Can they sit near you? Hand you a toy? Make eye contact? Celebrate those tiny moments!

🧸 Bring in comfort. A favorite toy or blanket can help bridge the gap between “I don’t want to do this” and “Okay, I’ll try.”

🫶 Regulate with them. Co-regulation (modeling calm breathing, staying grounded yourself) helps your child feel safe and supported enough to try again.

Every child has off days. Participation might look different day to day—and that’s okay. Showing up, connecting, and offering warmth makes a bigger impact than perfection ever will.

💛 You’re doing an amazing job.

✨ Noticing your toddler isn’t saying as much as other kids? ✨
You’re not alone — and it’s okay to be curious or concerned.

Many families reach out to me simply wanting to make sure their child is on track. You don’t need to “wait and see” if something feels off.

Early support can make a big difference — and it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Through play-based, personalized sessions, I help young children build the skills they need to express themselves, understand others, and grow in confidence.

Whether it’s a few words, gestures, or sounds — we meet your child where they are and move forward together.

🌞 Summer Speech Tip: Keep Talking, Keep Growing! 🌈

Whether you're road-tripping, splashing in the sprinkler, or just hanging out at home, summer is full of opportunities to boost language skills in simple, natural ways!

🎒 Try this:
Pack a “mystery bag” with 3-5 items and have your child guess what’s inside using WH questions (What do you use it for? Where do you find it? Why might someone need it?). Great for expressive language, problem-solving, and keeping curious minds busy!

💬 Remember: Play is never “just play.” It’s how kids build the foundation for speech, language, and social success. 💛

What are your favorite summer speech activities? 👇
