Happy Easter from Sylacauga Family Health!

02/06/2025

In August of 2024, we announced that Dr. Swearingen would be giving up the obstetrics part of our practice but would continue to care for the families of this community just like he always had.

Because of Dr. Swearingen's commitment to caring for the families of this community, and in light of recent events, he has decided to resume providing prenatal care and delivering babies at Coosa Valley Medical Center effective immediately. This will be a work in progress, so please be patient as we transition back into this role. We will do our very best to take care of the needs of this community to the best of our ability. It looks like the baby journal will be getting a few more entries!

When I came to Sylacauga 29 years ago, I was told about Dr. Gray, a tall pediatrician that was loved by kids and respected by families. When I started picking up pediatric patients, I could see the disappointment in the kids faces when I couldn't produce an airplane out of tongue blades or a chicken out of a rubber glove. I could see my pediatric population wouldn't improve until I met this man.
What a giant of a man, in stature and heart. He had a heart as big as Texas. That's when I knew the standards he had set in this area would be hard to live up to. As I watched him stroll down the 2nd floor hall of the old hospital with his head nearly banging into the ceiling, you could see the respect the families and the nurses had for him (even though he was often reprimanded by some of the nurses about his language and made to donate to the "cuss jar").
Whenever I was puzzled about a treatment plan, he was always there to help. When I needed a boost of confidence, he was there with a kind word. There is a definite generation gap between doctors like Dr. Gray and the doctors of today. The knowledge he passed down to younger doctors like myself and our friend, Dr. Garris, cannot be taught in medical school. It will be hard to find a doctor coming out of residency with Dr. Gray's dedication to his profession and his patients.
I will miss him as a colleague, a mentor, and a friend.
