Swain Community Hospital, a Duke LifePoint Hospital, is proud to announce that starting November 1, patients will have local access to CT enterography with IV contrast studies. This advanced imaging exam has not been available in Swain County until now, often requiring patients to travel elsewhere for care.

CT enterography produces detailed, high-resolution images of the small bowel, giving physicians a powerful tool to diagnose and monitor complex gastrointestinal conditions, including: Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, small bowel gastrointestinal bleeding, and small bowel tumors.

By offering this service close to home, we are expanding access to advanced diagnostics that can provide timely answers and guide treatment, reducing the need for patients to leave the community for specialized care.

We are especially proud of Dawn Shuler, RT(R)(CT), lead radiologic technologist at Swain Community Hospital, who spearheaded the addition of this service and is featured here. Her leadership and commitment have made this important advancement possible for our community.

Because preparation is required, CT enterography is not available as a walk-in exam. Patients should work with their primary care provider or gastroenterology specialist to schedule.

Did you know nearly 9 out of 10 adults struggle with understanding and using their health information? Understanding your health is the first step to taking care of it. We’re committed to clear communication, so every patient feels confident in their care.

We encourage patients to:
- Ask questions if something isn’t clear
- Bring a list of medications and concerns to appointments
- Repeat back instructions to confirm understanding

Together, providers and patients can build confidence, improve communication and make healthy choices.
