Essential Therapies

Essential Therapies Essential Therapies is a holistic physical therapy and wellness practice specializing in John F. Barnes My work is holistic.

Barnes Myofascial Release Approach, yoga, essential oils and total body wellness owned and operated by Cindy Hodgson, MS, PT, PhD. With over two decades of extensive training and experience, I bring compassionate care to every patient I treat. My goal is to relieve pain and restore ease and function to those seeking healing that traditional medicine has been unable to provide. I am a physical therapist extensively trained in the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach (JFBMFR), and hold graduate degrees in exercise physiology and biomechanics. I initially became intrigued by the power of MFR during my student internship when a simple cross-hand technique on a patient’s chest eliminated months of unabating pain. This revelation led me to seek my own healing through these methods. I have a long and successful track record of treating patients from all walks of life and in a myriad of settings including my own clinic. I have an expertise in women’s health after having trained and worked exclusively with women seeking help with fertility, pain and bladder issues. I have successfully treated TMJ, abdominal adhesions (scarring), headaches, postural dysfunction as well as many other conditions. I am interested in empowering you through learning self-care techniques that will enhance and solidify the work we do together. I enjoy teaching both patients and fellow therapists, and continue to explore the life-long benefits to be gained from fitness, nutrition, and yoga. I look forward to helping you advance your goal toward a pain free and healthy life.

“Without awareness, there is no choice.” — John Barnes

This video is part of the Launching 60 series.

Awareness is the first step of the Launching 60 embodiment journey.

In this video I share how awareness first began shaping my life—starting with martial arts and self-defense training, then strength training, posture awareness as a physical therapist, and ultimately a deeper understanding of how awareness connects the mind and body.

When we begin paying attention to our posture, breath, tension patterns, and emotions, we open the door to real change. Awareness allows us to make different choices in how we move, how we respond, and how we care for ourselves.

This video begins the ABCs of Launching 60.

Next in the series: B — Breath

I’m not 60 yet.
I’m fully 59.
Squeezing the most out of life.
Stay with me.

I’m not turning 60. I’m launching 60.
If this resonates… stay with me. Let’s elevate.

If one side of your spine is compressed creating a pelvic up slip on one side, try this self treatment technique to relieve compression and create myofascial release.

Even in a hotel room, gentle self-treatment can help the body unwind from travel, long days, and unfamiliar beds. With slow, sustained pressure and attentive breathing, the nervous system begins to settle—and the fascia responds. ✨

This isn’t about doing more.
It’s about listening.
Using what’s available.
And giving your body permission to soften wherever you are. 🧡

Small moments of self-care can make a meaningful difference—especially when consistency and presence are prioritized. 💜

Something as simple as blowing bubbles can help calm the nervous system, soften holding patterns, and bring awareness back into the body. With slow, steady exhalation, the system begins to shift—from protection toward ease. ✨
This isn’t about effort.
It’s about play.
Presence.
And allowing the body to feel safe enough to let go. 🧡

Small practices can create meaningful change—especially when we meet the body with patience and curiosity. 💜

Today the water in my cold plunge was colder than the outside air! It was 18 degrees outside, and my thermometer read 35 degrees in the water. That doesn’t mean the cold plunge was easy by any means, it was still crazy cold!

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at Essential Therapies!🦃🧡 May your day be full of warmth, loved ones, and self-care.

Some advice to new cold plungers: get a thermometer that is kinda of cute. I even gave mine a name, Lobby 🦀

Woke up to find my ice bath completely frozen over 🥶 The water was 34°F and the air was 23°F. Yep, the ice bath was actually warmer than the air! Still brutal… but that’s the point. Do hard things!
