Great information for seniors!

New Senior Tax Deduction Announced in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act

As part of the recently signed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a significant temporary tax benefit for seniors has been introduced — designed to offer meaningful financial relief during retirement years.

🔹 Starting in 2025, a new $6,000 deduction will be available for each qualifying individual (i.e., $12,000 total for a married couple where both spouses qualify)
🔹 This applies to both itemizers and non-itemizers — so more seniors can benefit
🔹 To qualify, you must be at least age 65
🔹 The deduction phases out once your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds $75,000 ($150,000 for joint filers)
🔹 This benefit is temporary, running from 2025 through 2028

💡 What’s a deduction?
A deduction reduces the amount of your income that is subject to federal income tax. For example, if you qualify for this $6,000 deduction and your taxable income was $50,000, you’d only be taxed on $44,000 — lowering your tax bill.

This change recognizes the growing financial pressures many seniors face and offers a new way to reduce taxable income. It is a meaningful step toward easing the tax burden for older adults — especially those on fixed incomes.

🚨 Scams Targeting Older Adults – What You Need to Know 🚨

Lately, scammers are getting incredibly sophisticated especially when targeting older adults. According to the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, seniors lost nearly $4.8 billion to scams last year, with average losses of $83,000 per victim  . That’s heartbreaking, but there’s hope: being informed helps protect our loved ones.

These are two real world examples recently :
• AI-powered “grandchild” voice phishing on Long Island: Scammers are using AI to clone the voices of real grandchildren—often lifted from TikTok or social media—and calling elderly relatives pretending they’re in an emergency. Victims have handed over thousands before realizing it’s a hoax .
• The $30 million “grandparent” scam ring: An international racket out of Montreal convinced seniors across 46 states to wire money after impersonating their grandchildren and creating fake emergencies. The leader is now in custody .

How to protect yourself and those you care about:
1. Use a “shared secret.” Decide on a code word or phrase with family so your loved ones can verify that a caller is legitimate .
2. Be suspicious of urgency. Anytime someone pressures you to “do it NOW” or warns of dire consequences, stop and verify!
3. Ask for proof. Ask incoming callers for specific details only your real family members would know.
4. Never send money via gift cards, crypto, wire transfers, or courier—especially if they say “don’t tell anyone.”
5. Check under the hood of seemingly trustworthy apps and calls — scammers can spoof phone numbers and use AI-generated voices.
