🚨Pain Myth #1 (of 5):

“You just need to rest until it feels better.”

You’ve probably gotten this advice from a friend or family member (or maybe even a doctor).

🤭The “just rest” advice drives us crazy because it’s not the best route to go and unlikely to help you out.

If rest helped, then nobody would be in pain for more than a week or two, right!?

🤐When you hear the “just rest” advice, what the person is actually saying is they don’t really know how to help you, but they want to tell you something, so they just say rest.

Resting not only doesn’t help most people, but it could actually make your problem worse.

☝🏼This is especially true for athletes - stopping all your training/practicing isn’t good for you.

Athletic injuries tend to be complex and often cause compensations that can increase your injury risk and/or affect your performance.

❗️So don’t accept “just rest” as sound medical advice and the answer to your current problem.

Find a good healthcare professional who can help you get back to your usual self!

As a follow up to our last post that described an active stretch to get your knee straighter, here’s the passive, “lazy” way to get your knee straighter.

It looks simple, but it’s very effective…only if you do it frequently enough.

We recommend using this stretch for at least 60 minutes a day - you can break up the 60 minutes into smaller segments if you like.

So if you’re struggling to get your knee straight after a knee injury or surgery, give this one a try.

• Feeling like you should be getting more from your PT?

• Not happy with your PT experience?

Hopefully this post helps you figure out if you’re in the right place or if you should be looking for a different person to work with.

Don’t just skip out on PT because your current experience isn’t working for you.

We can’t tell you how many times we’ve worked with someone who had been going to another PT clinic and said what we were doing with them was nothing like the prior PT clinic they went to.

Remember, it’s your health and your choice!

If you are having any limitations with your overhead mobility, try this self mobilization of the cervicothoracic junction (CTJ).

1️⃣ Start in a sitting position next to a wall with a ball
2️⃣ Place the ball above your shoulder blades
3️⃣ Bend your knees and plant your feet into the ground
4️⃣ Perform a chin tuck (by making a double chin) and raise your arms to try and touch the wall
5️⃣ As you raise your arms, the ball will push into your back
6️⃣Perform 15 reps

After the 15 reps, test out your overhead mobility to see if there is any improvement

➡️If you want to improve your overhead shoulder mobility, don’t hesitate to reach out to us -DM us, call/text (516)-888-9661, or follow us to see some tips.

Rotator cuff tears are a common diagnosis and most people think the only thing that can be done to "fix" it is surgery. And we want you to know that that's not the case and there's plenty of research to back it up.⠀⠀
Physical therapy has been proven to be an effective way to treat rotator cuff tears - in many cases more effective than surgery. ⠀⠀
Surgery is scary for a lot of people and rightfully so. It comes with many risks and potential complications. And if there's another proven treatment option (PT) without any of those risks, it's a no-brainer what you should try first.⠀⠀
So, if you've been diagnosed with a rotator cuff tear and are struggling with what to do, PT should be your first choice.⠀⠀
And I should emphasize that you should find a good PT to work with and not someone who gives you minimal attention and passes you along to other staff.⠀⠀
Don't hesitate to DM us if you have any questions/concerns about your shoulder issue. ⠀⠀

If you or a loved one has had ACL surgery and are trying to get back to playing sports, research shows that waiting at least 9 months before returning to sport is ideal. We know that sounds like a lot, but even professional athletes take that amount of time! ⠀⠀
Everyone’s return to play progression/plan is going to be different, but they should all start with planning on returning in the 9-12 month range (and then adjust accordingly).⠀⠀
We’ve sometimes had surgeons advise their patients to go back to playing at 6 months, but we have found that at 6 months people still have significant impairments (especially quad weakness) and are not ready to handle the high physical demands that come with playing sports.⠀⠀
Take-home message: DO NOT rush back to playing sports - aim for the 9-12 month range. Making sure you hit certain criteria (at least - full range of motion, no swelling, quad strength >90%, single-leg hop testing >90%) and complete an appropriate sport activities progression individualized to your needs.⠀⠀
Tag someone who needs to see this stat. And don’t hesitate to DM us if you have any questions or concerns.
