An orphan by age 4 and a Rough Rider by 24, Gustave A. Kalbe was the first to fire – and the first U.S. soldier killed – in the Spanish-American War. Buried in Cuba, his body was brought home thanks to a Syracuse newspaper editor who orchestrated a 4,000-mile journey. Over the past 144 years, Woodlawn has continuously added memorial options to accommodate the Central New York community we were founded to serve. Our latest project will add more space to handle the ever-growing demand for mausoleum entombment. The 7,800-square-foot Reflections of Life Mausoleum near the Sunset Mausoleum Complex will add over 1,150 crypt spaces and 600 niches when it opens later this year. Watch our website and social media for updates as progress is made and these indoor and outdoor spaces become available for pre-planning.
