We are proud to celebrate our warriors on World Sickle Cell Day and Juneteenth 2022!

Juneteenth
Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signingof the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.

We are proud to celebrate our warriors on World Sickle Cell Day and Juneteenth!

This year, we are excited to share a special event with the American Red Cross in support of people living with sickle cell.

The American Red Cross has an initiative to better support sickle cell patients by increasing diversity in the blood supply. The more diverse the blood supply is, the better chance that there will be a good match for sickle cell patients in need of transfusions.

Below, you will see Lydia’s story, a young lady living with sickle cell who has been the recipient of blood donations.

The American Red Cross has launched a national initiative to grow the number of blood donors who are Black to help patients with sickle cell disease and impr...

— About The Kara Fund —
To ease the stress and chaos associated with unimaginable situations, The Kara Fund provides seriously ill children and their families with goods and services in the hope that these items offer some measure of comfort in their time of distress. They are there for our families in the hospital, specialty clinics, the Crouse NICU, traveling to distant medical centers for specialty care and even home hospice.

A little background on how The Kara Fund supports our families:

- The Pillar Project provides supportive books and resources for children and their loved ones affected by complex and life-threatening conditions, including sickle cell disease, to support medical coping, communication, and bereaved families.

- They offer gift cards for food, travel, and other needs to families in the hospital and the outpatient settings so they can focus on what is important.

- The Family Care Program is there to support the individual needs of each family, including financial support to meet basic needs as well as offering special opportunities to kids that they may not have otherwise. Every Family Care Package is tailored to the child and family's needs as well as interests and hopes. When a condition is not able to be cured, this program supports kids' last wishes and helps to make memories of a lifetime.

- The Kara Fund provides a specialized comfort kit for each child with Sickle Cell Disease with items that help kids meet their medical needs and feel comfortable when they aren’t feeling well. This includes a specialized Kara Fund tote bag, reusable heating pads, digital thermometers, medical coping books from The Pillar Project, medicine organizers, tools to help with breathing, cozy blankets, and gift cards to be sure that kids have what they need to stay healthy and to cope well.

- They supported the development of a patient-designed Thriving Together t-shirt for Pediatric Sickle Cell patients to allow them to showcase their strength, creativity and resilience. The Kara Fund graciously purchased a shirt for every child who receives care from our program as well as for the staff.

- Members of The Kara Fund have also been friendly faces who show up and participate in our fun activities like our first Thriving Together Pediatric Sickle Cell Supportive event in 2019, where they helped to organize the event, serve an awesome dinner, and have fun with face painting, a photo booth, and karaoke with our kids and families. They even participated in the 2021 Talented & Thriving video that allowed the kids to show off their talents!

- They fund The Always Love Photography Program through Jennifer Phillips Root and Wander Photography business gives families the chance to capture special memories at no cost with incredible photographer Jennifer Phillips.

- They provide comfortable bedding for caregivers when they stay at their child's bedside for extended hospital admissions.

- They offer Smallprints Memory Treasure hand and foot print jewelry to families with a baby in the NICU with life-threatening conditions.

- The Kara Fund offers heartbeat recordings of their baby or child with life-limiting illness so that families can have this as a beautiful keepsake to remember their child.

- When children come in for a hospital admission or clinic visit, they get to pick a special toy or prize of their choice, which gives them something to look forward to and take home.

We cannot say enough about the compassion that the Kara Fund Shows every day to our kids and families and how they consider each individual patient and their loved ones to promote comfort during some of the most difficult times, as well as during routine visits. Without the support of The Kara Fund and their supporters, our CHOICES Pediatric Palliative Care Program and Pediatric Sickle Cell Program would not be able to bring such comfort, meaning, and joy to families affected by life-altering and life-limiting conditions.

Thank you for remembering and honoring Charlie by supporting the Kara Fund and the work they do every day to support our families.

Charlie was a recipient of The Kara Fund Comfort Care Program and CHOICES, which is a pediatric palliative care program intended to improve quality of life for children with life-altering and life-limiting conditions as well as those receiving end-of-life care.

Charlie was a witty, athletic, caring, and spunky kid, just like Kara. Charlie was diagnosed with a brain tumor called DIPG, (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) in February of 2016 when he was 14 years old. DIPG is an inoperable, aggressive tumor in the brainstem for which there is no cure and only experimental treatments to buy time. Charlie was given the devastating news that he had less than 18 months to live. Charlie refused to let cancer steal his spirit. He decided to take charge, and explore treatments to give him some time and hope.

Charlie surpassed his prognosis and died on August 6, 2018 at 17 years old. He is remembered for his quirky humor and wit, as demonstrated by his page’s bio: “I have brain cancer, I do not want your pity. I will take some pie though, pie is the best.”

Please join us by sharing a “slice of pie” with Charlie sharing this post.

Supporters can purchase an item starting at $3.99 for kids and families with the CHOICES Pediatric Palliative Care and Pediatric Sickle Cell Programs to promote comfort and joy and to offset expenses for children and their loved ones affected by serious illness.
