The theme is “Our Bodies Belong to Us: Restoring Black Autonomy and Joy,” which speaks to our strength, power and resilience, and our unassailable right to live freely, safely, and joyfully.

The events and programming being planned throughout will fully embody this theme and offer opportunities to engage in activities and conversations that honor the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements.

This year marks the 6th annual Black Maternal Health Week ( ), which will be held from April 11-17, 2023! In order to uplift Black women and their families, we at the National Black Midwives Alliance/Southern Birth Justice Network are joining forces with Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA) to center Black women’s scholarship, maternity care work, and advocacy across the full spectrum of sexual, maternal, and reproductive health care, services, programs, and initiatives. Join us today! Learn more at blackmamasmatter.org/bmhw

Posted • Counter Pressure during labor!🤚
Counter pressure is a very helpful non-pharmacological pain relief method to use during labour. It is a great way to get your support person involved!💪🏻
You can use your palms, elbows or closed fist to provider pressure to areas on the lower back experiencing pain during labour. When a contraction is occurring, the support person applies firm pressure to the lower back area. When the contraction is over, pressure is released. 🤜🤛
This provides temporary relief. Sometimes, the use of counter pressure can be tiring for the person providing the counter pressure. It can take a lot of strength to continually apply firm pressure during the contractions. It is well worth it though! ———————————————————————————

Posted • “A riot is the language of the unheard.” Martin Luther King Jr.
Reproductive Justice involves more than what happens with birthing people and families when they go see their doctors and midwives and they labor and give birth.
Reproductive justice intertwines with all of the aspects of our lives that make us feel safe or in danger, that help us to thrive or oppress us, that allow us to be who we are or try to demean and disempower us.
The more that all of us in the birth world understand this and create systems to help impact this — in and outside of birth work itself — the better chance we have to heal, grow and thrive.
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution here. Get to know your community. Be humble. Seek knowledge. Redistribute. When you fall, get back up. You might fall again but you’ll fall better next time. And just like labor, the pain has a purpose. It’s worth it.
