Our Story
Treasure Rocks began years ago when I was student teaching and needed a fun activity to do with our students revolving around dinosaurs. I went searching and found a really cool recipe for Dinosaur Eggs. I whipped up a batch and my 3,4 and 5 year old students in the daycares loved them! They loved using hammers and finding the surprise dinosaur inside. From there dinosaur eggs have traveled with me to many classrooms.
Over the last couple of years I expanded on what was included in the dinosaur eggs from dinosaurs to gold coins, erasers, little trains and more. From daycare classrooms to inclusive pre-kindergarten classrooms with children of various needs (sensory, developmental, therapeutic etc) dinosaur eggs have always been a great hit. Those students who have trouble engaging and focusing on a simple task find themselves sitting at the table and breaking open eggs for hours on end, leaving me running out of them. The excitement of what is going to be found inside. The motor planning of holding a hammer or mallet, hand-eye coordination of knowing where to place the hammer or mallet on the egg and then using their little fingers to finish breaking the treasure out and cleaning it up.
Most recently in April of 2019 my Mom and daughter Chloe mixed up a batch of dinosuar egg dough and hand made over 48 eggs filled with dinosaurs and super hereos for a teacher conference engagement activity. All of the teachers loved cracking open the eggs and many asked about them. This lead to the idea of spreading the love of dinosaur eggs and adding in other surprises. From there Treasure Eggs was created but we needed a little more so Treasure Rocks was created from the form and look, along with the hardness of each rock. Treasure Rocks continue to be hand made by myself and my 4 year old daughter in memory of my Mother who unexpectedly passed away in July of 2019 and never again was able to engage in the joy of making or breaking open Treasure Rocks with her granddaughter.
