Elective induction around a holiday is for convenience, but not yours.

With Thanksgiving & Christmas coming up, loads of unnecessary inductions and c-sections are about to happen.

Every year there is a HUGE decrease in births on (and around)...

🔆 Christmas
🔆 New Year’s Eve/Day
🔆 Easter (changes yearly - first Sunday after the full moon in April)
🔆 Memorial Day (changes yearly - last Monday in May in the US)
🔆 Independence Day (4th of July in the US)
🔆 Thanksgiving (changes yearly - last Thursday in November)

And it’s not just the United States - it's everywhere.

How could it be that all of these holidays have lower birth rates year after year?

It’s not a coincidence - it’s about convenience.

And not YOUR convenience. The convenience of providers.

No one wants to work on holidays, and hospital birth providers have a way to make sure (for the most part) that they don’t have to.

Inductions & c-sections are rarely scheduled ON holidays, but they ARE frequently scheduled in the days leading up to, or just after, a holiday.

If you are due around a holiday, and your provider suggests an induction or c-section, it’s a good idea to question why (remember that you always have the right to decline). If there is NOT a legitimate medical reason, they may be more concerned with being home in time for a holiday dinner than your well being.

For more info and references on this topic, check out my FREE holiday births handout on my website (birthuprising.com/resources).

Hi Loveys! I will not be offering any in person doula services at all from May-August 2024. Come September 2024 I will only be offering 1 birth doula service a month- with certain circumstances.
Postpartum support will be available virtually come September 2024 as well, In person shifts offered will be max 2 hours.

07/10/2023

Postpartum care is so important. If you know a new mom, offer to come help. Most new moms won’t ask for help but really need it. 🌸

May is Maternal Mental Health month, and the Southern Colorado Doula Collective is excited to be hosting a Prenatal Workshop on May 20th at 10 am at Phoenix Massage.

We are pleased to announce that Sarah Fowler of Compass Rose Counseling, LLC will be speaking about maternal mental health during this event.

Sarah is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in helping women navigate the unique challenges of motherhood. She is passionate about supporting women through perinatal mental health struggles and helping them build resilience and coping skills.

During this workshop, Sarah will be sharing important information about maternal mental health, including risk factors, warning signs, and available resources for support. She'll also provide practical tips for self-care and stress management during pregnancy and postpartum.

At the Southern Colorado Doula Collective, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health during pregnancy and postpartum. We're honored to have Sarah join us for this event and share her expertise with our community.

If you're an expectant or new parent in Southern Colorado, don't miss out on this opportunity to learn more about maternal mental health and connect with other parents-to-be.

We are again hearing from women who are being advised to agree to induction of labour because of an upcoming holiday weekend.

So we wanted to offer this reminder that Easter, like all other festivals and holidays, isn't an indication for induction of labour.

And that it's important to get informed so that you can make the decisions that are right for you.

Not for your caregiver, family, friends, the hospital or even the Easter bunny.

If you'd like more information, feel free to have a surf around www.sarawickham.com or have a look at my books, which are all about helping you to make your own birth-related decisions.

And we have a whole hub of induction information at www.sarawickham.com/iol

You will reach a point in your labour where your cervix will complete it's opening for you baby to move into the birth path. Also known as transition.

During this time your body releases a large surge of oxytocin and adrenaline to boost your energy for birthing your baby and to make those surges long and strong to move your baby down to the birth path.

As you can imagine this cocktail of hormones can bring you up and out of your relaxed state and many witnessing the birth will notice a sudden change in the woman's behaviour.

Signs of transition can include
• Strong lower back or pelvic pressure
• Feelings of needing to do a poo
• Nausea or vomiting
• Lower or upper body tremors
• Vocalisation, primal sounds
• Hot or cold feeling
• Change in breathing pattern
• Toe curling
• Spotting
• Membranes releasing

Some women will begin to ask for pain relief or ask for the labour to be stopped. Some may try and escape or start saying 'I can't do this anymore'. There are some women who don't make a noise at all. We are all different and there is no right or wrong way to act during this time.

A good thing to remember is that when you reach this point you are almost there mama!! There are many things that can help you during this time that your partner can do.

• Hip squeeze
• Apply counter pressure as you lean back
• Use an anchor touch to ground you
• Get into your ear saying positive affirmations
• Help you into more comfortable positions
• Hold you
• Massage your legs, back, shoulders
• Apply acupressure
• Simply be present

This phase of a woman's labour is generally quick lasting from 15 minutes to 1 hour.
Once it passes you may get a restful period before you begin to bear down or you may just get that urge to begin to bear down straight away.

Roll with it, don't fight it!
