Ever wonder why people wear crazy socks on Down Syndrome Awareness Day?

Chromosomes are shaped like socks and March 21 (3/21) represents the triplication of the 21st chromosome.

So we celebrate by wearing bold, colorful, mismatched socks to spark conversations and show support.

✨ A Day of Learning, Giving, and Community Connection ✨

On Friday, March 13, individuals from our Employment Department’s Community Based Prevocational Services and Employment Training Programs had the opportunity to job shadow and tour The Maples Assisted Living Facility in Fulton.

Participants explored several roles throughout the facility, spending time with the chef in the kitchen, shadowing janitorial staff, observing a nurse’s aide, helping with dietary while lunch was served, visiting reception, and learning about the activities program.

To top off the visit, flowers were generously donated and individuals had the joy of handing them out to residents as a volunteer activity, sharing smiles and brightening a few afternoons along the way. 🌸

Experiences like this help build confidence, explore career interests, and strengthen connections in our community. Thank you to The Maples Assisted Living Facility for welcoming our group and providing such a meaningful experience! 🤝

Today marks the anniversary of the Capitol Crawl, a powerful moment in disability rights history.

On March 12, 1990, disability advocates gathered in Washington, D.C. to demand the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. When they reached the steps of the U.S. Capitol, dozens of activists left their wheelchairs, crutches, and mobility devices and began crawling up the Capitol steps. Their message was clear. The barriers they faced every day needed to end.

The demonstration became known as the Capitol Crawl and helped bring national attention to the urgent need for civil rights protections for people with disabilities. Just a few months later, the ADA was signed into law, transforming accessibility and opportunity across the country.

At ARISE EFR, we honor the advocates who fought for access, equality, and dignity. Their courage continues to inspire the work we do every day to build a more inclusive community.
