Upstate Trauma

Upstate Trauma Central New York's only Level I Trauma Center serving 14 counties spanning from Canada to Pennsylvania.

Each year, more then 140,000 Americans die from injuries, and one in three Americans suffer from a nonfatal injury. Trauma is a major contributor to:
-Loss of work
-Increase in health care costs
-Shortage of Intensive Care Unit beds

Trauma is a physical injury caused by an external force to the body. This force may be from a motor vehicle accident, gunshot, stabbing or fall from height. Major trauma includes patients with multiple systems involvement who require immediate intervention to save their life.

This weekend, our Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, Anthony Scalise, traveled to Binghamton to present on our long-standing “Let’s Not Meet By Accident” teen driver safety program.

The Conference brought together driver education instructors and traffic safety partners from across New York State through the NYS Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association.

During the presentation, participants learned about the evolution and impact of this trauma-center–based program, including strategies used to educate young drivers about the real-world consequences of risky driving behaviors.

Topics discussed included:
• Teen and young adult driver safety initiatives
• Simulation-based education
• Partnerships with law enforcement
• Using data analytics to guide prevention strategies
• Advocacy and community engagement

Thank you to Troy and the members of the NYS Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association for the opportunity to collaborate and share this work with educators from across the state.

Do you move over when you see a vehicle on the shoulder?

🚨 Move Over. Slow Down. It’s the Law in New York.

When you see emergency, tow, utility, highway vehicles & passenger cars stopped with flashing lights, move over to the next lane if it’s safe. If you can’t, slow down.

These workers are just feet from traffic.

Give them space. Save lives.

Upstate Trauma provided a Stop the Bleed training today at the Onondaga County Forensic Science Center, where participants learned how to recognize life threatening bleeding and how to take immediate action to help save a life.

Participants practiced applying tourniquets and wound packing using training equipment. These hands on skills help prepare community partners to respond during bleeding emergencies before first responders arrive.

We appreciate the opportunity to work with staff at the Onondaga County Forensic Science Center to expand bleeding control education in our community!
