Upstate Trauma

Upstate Trauma Central New York's only Level I Trauma Center serving 14 counties spanning from Canada to Pennsylvania.

Each year, more then 140,000 Americans die from injuries, and one in three Americans suffer from a nonfatal injury. Trauma is a major contributor to:
-Loss of work
-Increase in health care costs
-Shortage of Intensive Care Unit beds

Trauma is a physical injury caused by an external force to the body. This force may be from a motor vehicle accident, gunshot, stabbing or fall from height. Major trauma includes patients with multiple systems involvement who require immediate intervention to save their life.

🏥Upstate Trauma Center Hits the Road!⚕️

Our team traveled north to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center & Medical Campus in Ogdensburg, NY to deliver the Rural Trauma Team Development Course (RTTDC) — a nationally recognized program from the American College of Surgeons designed to help rural hospitals improve the care of severely injured patients. RTTDC focuses on enhancing communication, coordination, and critical decision-making among the rural trauma team to optimize outcomes before patients reach a trauma center.

To close out the full day of training, our instructors also provided a Stop the Bleed® course, empowering Claxton-Hepburn staff to become instructors themselves and extend lifesaving hemorrhage control education throughout their community. 🩸

Together, we’re strengthening trauma care — no matter the distance. 🌐

🚧 Upstate Trauma Center Is On the Road Again! 🚧

Today, our Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, Anthony Scalise, was honored to deliver the Keynote Address at the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) – New York Upstate Section Meeting in Geneva, NY.

The event brought together transportation engineers, planners, safety professionals, and community leaders — the people who design how our roads are built and how our communities move. Anthony shared the trauma center perspective on roadway injuries and highlighted how partnership and collaboration are essential to preventing them before they happen.

By combining hospital trauma data with smart roadway design, strong enforcement, and public education, we can create a Central New York where human mistakes don’t have to be fatal. Together, we’re building safer roads, stronger communities, and a future where fewer families ever have to meet us in the trauma bay.

🚑Tompkins County EMS Teaching Day! 🚑

Upstate Trauma was honored to be a part of this day at Tompkins Cortland Community College, joining EMS professionals in learning and collaboration.

Our presenters shared powerful insights:
⛑️ Jerry Morrison, Education & Outreach Coordinator – The Kinematics of Falls (our #1 injury mechanism)
⛑️ Anthony Scalise, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, and Susie Surprenant, CNY EMS Program Agency Director – Results from the Joint EMS CQI Study on Falls in the CNY Region

🔎 Among the final study results, one key takeaway highlighted today was that Cortland and Tompkins counties have the highest incidence rates of patients over 65 experiencing falls in the CNY EMS 5-county Region.

💡 EMS providers: Want to dive deeper? Don’t miss the Weinstein Lecture Series on November 7 at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse. Sign up at: https://cnyems.org

Together, we can strengthen practice, improve outcomes, and prevent injuries across our communities.

✂️🚨 Tonight, Upstate Trauma’s Injury Prevention Coordinator, Anthony Scalise, attended the Utica City Schools CTE Wing Ribbon Cutting at Proctor High School.

As part of the planning process, Upstate Trauma helped incorporate Stop the Bleed®, a certificate-bearing course that students in the Health CTE pathway will be able to complete. This important training equips young people with lifesaving skills and strengthens connections between education and healthcare.

The new CTE wing, which broke ground on May 22, 2024, is officially opening this fall (2025). Programming will phase in beginning with freshmen and expand until full capacity by 2029, creating authentic, career-focused learning opportunities that prepare students for their futures.

We look forward to continuing to work with Utica City School District to empower students to be ready to act in the event of a traumatic injury.

👏 Congratulations to Utica City School District, Proctor High School, and all the partners who made this milestone possible!

🚸 Schools are Open – Drive Safe! 🚸

This morning, Upstate Trauma and SafeKids Upstate NY joined the Onondaga County Traffic Safety Advisory Board, law enforcement, and local school leaders at the Baldwinsville Central School District Transportation Center for the annual Schools Open Traffic Safety Press Conference.

✅ Key safety reminders for drivers:
• Slow down in school zones and neighborhoods.
• Stop for school buses when red lights are flashing—never pass a stopped bus.
• Stay alert for children walking, biking, or getting on/off buses.

Every child deserves a safe trip to and from school. Let’s work together to keep our roads safe this school year!

🚨 Drivers Stay Alert Around Horse & Buggies 🚨

Every year, Upstate Trauma Center treats patients who are injured in motor vehicle crashes involving horse and buggy transportation. These crashes are preventable if we all do our part.

✅ Slow down when you see a buggy in either lane. Most travel only 5–10 mph, so you will approach much faster than you think.
✅ Only pass when it’s safe and legal. The American Trauma Society recommends leaving at least 20 ft in front of the horse before pulling back into the lane.
✅ Be patient. Do not honk or rev your engine, as it may spook the horse.
✅ Watch for signals. Buggy drivers often use hand signals or lanterns to indicate turns.
✅ Stay alert. Get off your phone and keep your eyes on the road!

📌 While motorists must slow down and share the road, it’s also true that many buggy drivers already take safety seriously—using reflective triangles, sometimes lights, and traveling on the shoulder when possible. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and together, we can prevent serious injuries and save lives.

Let’s all show respect on the road and protect our neighbors who travel by horse and buggy.
