🚸 Proud to Support Vision Zero in Tompkins County! 🚸
Upstate Trauma was honored to participate in the Tompkins County Joint Safety Advisory Committee as part of the Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic deaths and reduce serious injuries by 50% by 2040.
Working alongside Tompkins County, 10 local municipalities, the Ithaca-Tompkins County Transportation Council, NYSDOT, and community organizations, we contributed to a comprehensive Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Joint Safety Action Plan, just released to the public.
🔍 Key findings from the Plan:
31 fatal crashes occurred between 2019 and 2023, with nearly $488 million in societal costs.
Rural crashes—while fewer—caused over 60% of serious injuries and deaths.
Equity matters: Disadvantaged communities saw a significantly higher crash rate, especially for vulnerable road users (VRUs).
Top safety concerns from the public included:
🚗 Speeding
🚦 Unsafe crossings
🚶 Lack of sidewalks/crosswalks
🌉 Poor visibility at complex intersections
📍 The Plan identifies 20 priority safety locations across the county, many of which are on NYS Routes 13, 96, and 34B. These locations will be the focus of future improvements.
💡 This collaborative effort emphasizes data-driven action, community feedback, and equitable safety investments. Upstate Trauma Injury Prevention is proud to support strategies that make walking, biking, driving, and transit safer for all—especially our most vulnerable neighbors.
🛑 This is what Vision Zero looks like—smart policy, shared responsibility, and a commitment to saving lives.
