Upstate Trauma

Upstate Trauma Central New York's only Level I Trauma Center serving 14 counties spanning from Canada to Pennsylvania.

Each year, more then 140,000 Americans die from injuries, and one in three Americans suffer from a nonfatal injury. Trauma is a major contributor to:
-Loss of work
-Increase in health care costs
-Shortage of Intensive Care Unit beds

Trauma is a physical injury caused by an external force to the body. This force may be from a motor vehicle accident, gunshot, stabbing or fall from height. Major trauma includes patients with multiple systems involvement who require immediate intervention to save their life.

📣 Did you catch our fantastic Trauma Nurse Navigator on the Upstate Informed podcast?

Traumatic injury patients don’t just heal physically — their emotional and psychological recovery is just as important. 🎗️

Our very own Genevieve DeFrancesco, Trauma Nurse Navigator and Coordinator of our Adult Trauma Survivors' Network, joined the Informed podcast to discuss the emotional journey trauma patients experience and her upcoming study on mental and emotional recovery after serious injury.

❄️ WINTER DRIVING SAFETY REMINDER FROM UPSTATE TRAUMA ❄️
With winter weather arriving in Central New York, make sure you and your vehicle are ready for the road.
🚗 Before You Leave
• Clear ALL snow and ice from windows, mirrors, headlights, and taillights.
• Make sure your wipers, brakes, tires, and battery are in good condition.
• Keep winter essentials in your car: shovel, ice scraper, jumper cables, blankets, phone charger, water, snacks.
• Add antifreeze and check fluid levels.
⚠️ On the Road
• Slow down and increase following distance — leave extra room to stop.
• Avoid sudden braking or turning on slick roads.
• Use lower gears for traction and keep headlights on.
• If you start to skid, don’t brake—ease off the gas and steer gently in the direction you want to go.
🆘 If You Get Stuck or Stranded
• Don’t spin your wheels — use sand or kitty litter for traction.
• Stay with your vehicle unless you are certain you can safely reach help.
• Make sure the exhaust pipe is clear and run the heater for short intervals.
Stay safe, slow down, and give yourself extra time this winter! ❄️

🚨 THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS FOR JOINING US TODAY 🚨
Upstate Trauma was proud to stand alongside The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee of New York, the New York State Department of Transportation, Syracuse Police, and our regional public safety partners to reinforce the importance of safe and sober driving as we enter one of the most dangerous travel periods of the year.

We were fortunate to have been asked to contribute to today’s event, with Dr. Anna Wu, one of our trauma surgeons, and Anthony Scalise, our Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, speaking on behalf of Upstate University Hospital. Both emphasized the rising severity of motor-vehicle crashes in Central New York and the tragic ripple effects that impaired, distracted, and high-risk driving behaviors have on individuals, families, and our community.

The night before Thanksgiving—often called “Blackout Wednesday”—is historically marked by a sharp increase in alcohol use and impaired driving. With statewide travel and celebrations underway, now is the time to make a plan, choose a sober ride, and stay alert behind the wheel.

If you missed the press conference, look for coverage and key insights on local news stations throughout the week.

Let’s work together to keep Central New York safe this holiday season.

We’re excited to share that our Trauma Center was recently featured on “The Informed Patient” Podcast, soon to air on WRVO Public Media’s “Healthlink On Air.”

During the interview, Trauma Program Manager Melaina King talked about what it means to be a level I trauma center, the research and injury prevention initiatives at Upstate, and our top 10% national survival outcomes. We also walked through what trauma care typically looks like for patients and families during their hospital stay.

A big thank you to James Howe and Amber Smith for helping us share the important work our Trauma Teams do every day.

November 18th is National Injury Prevention Day!

Injuries are the leading cause of death and disability in the U.S. for individuals ages 1 to 44. On average, more than 4,000 people per year in Onondaga County are hospitalized as a result from unintentional injuries.

Upstate Trauma has teamed up with Safe Kids Upstate NY Coalition, the Clark Burn Center and Upstate Pediatric Trauma for this years awareness campaign.

Please join us in lighting up your home or business green in recognition of this special day and to raise awareness for those affected by unintentional injuries.

Stay tuned for pictures of all the locations who shined a light green for this initiative!
