Today, we proudly unveiled new statues and dedicated our courtyard in honor of two trailblazing women physicians whose legacies began right here at Upstate Medical University.

✨ Elizabeth Blackwell, Class of 1849, was the nation’s first woman physician and a lifelong advocate for women’s rights and medical education.

✨ Sarah Loguen Fraser, Class of 1876, was the nation’s first Black woman physician to graduate from a co-ed medical school, and the first female physician in the Dominican Republic.

Their courage and perseverance opened doors for generations of physicians who followed. Today, their presence on our campus stands as a lasting reminder of their impact on medicine and history. 💙

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 21, 2025) – Halloween should be full of costumes, candy, and fun, and not unexpected emergencies. As families across our state prepare for celebrations, the Upstate New York Poison Center is reminding parents and caregivers to stay alert to potential poisoning risks.

Upstate Medical University and Hudson Headwaters Health Network are teaming up to launch the North Country Medical Scholars Program, a new effort to support medical students with roots in the Adirondack and Glens Falls regions.

Scholars will receive financial support and commit to serving communities across eight rural counties in New York’s North Country, helping to expand access to care and strengthen the local physician workforce.

Congratulations to our first group of North Country Medical Scholars: Cole Carpenter, Mairead Lawliss, Sarah Hoh and Rachel Milone! 👏
