Crystal Perry, RN from 7C is our DAISY Honoree for the month of January 2026.
The nomination below was submitted by a Veteran Crystal provided care for.
The first time I was admitted to 7C at the Syracuse VA Medical Center, I met Crystal. From the very beginning, she showed genuine care and concern. She took the time to sit with me, listen without judgment, and help me troubleshoot and problem-solve the many challenges I was facing in my life. She was patient, kind, and incredibly knowledgeable. During a vulnerable time, she made me feel heard, respected, and supported.
When I was admitted again months later, seeing Crystal’s warm smile was immediately comforting. Knowing she was still there gave me a sense of peace and reassurance. I felt confident that I would once again be in capable and compassionate hands.
Crystal’s commitment to excellence was especially evident on Presidents Day 2026. Because it was an observed holiday, many of the usual weekday group facilitators were not present, and weekends had already been limited due to staffing needs and new admissions. I assumed the holiday would be quiet, with few or no groups offered. I was happily mistaken.
Crystal stepped up in an extraordinary way. She facilitated four separate groups that day. Her groups started in the morning, continuing through the afternoon, and even after dinner. Not only did she ensure that patients had structured activities, but she made the groups engaging, meaningful, and educational. One group session included an ice cream social combined with a stress-management bingo game. Each participant received a small ice cream cone shaped card with an inspirational message. It was thoughtful, creative, and uplifting.
The highlight of the day was the evening group she led, which she shared had the largest turnout she had seen, with nine veterans attending. What Crystal created that evening was more than just a group session. She gave us something powerful and healing: laughter, smiles, and camaraderie. In a setting where many of us are struggling, she reminded us of connection and joy, which is something no medication can replace.
Crystal consistently goes above and beyond her responsibilities. She does not simply complete tasks; she creates moments of dignity, hope, and humanity for the veterans in her care. Her compassion, initiative, and dedication embody the true spirit of nursing.
Thank you, Crystal, for the difference you make every single day for not only me, but all of your patients.
