Congratulations to DAISY Award recipient, Rachael Schmidt, RN from our 4 South Irving Unit!

Rachael was nominated by a colleague, who stated: “It is an honor to observe moments like this in person. Rachael had taken the time to get to know her patient enough to know that he wanted to die at home so he could be with his St. Bernard, Hawkeye. When she recognized that he was imminent, Rachael called his wife and arranged for her to bring Hawkeye in to visit. With a room filled with family and a giant St. Bernard, the patient began to perk up. He was awake, responsive, and was able to express his gratitude to Rachael for allowing him time with his precious pup. Although there were some excited barks heard outside of the room, staff did not seem to mind. It was a beautiful moment. Having not met his goal of dying at home, at least he had a nurse like Rachael who took the extra time to arrange for his dog to visit.”

Thank you Rachael for your deep commitment to caring for your patients.

We 💙 our updates:

"I had a perfectly normal and healthy pregnancy, and everything went smoothly right up until delivery. My son’s heart rate began to dip, and for safety, I ended up having a C-section. Because I delivered at Crouse, I was already in a facility equipped with a NICU, which gave me a lot of peace of mind in an otherwise stressful moment. The decision to deliver at Crouse proved to be the right one, as he immediately received incredible, attentive care from a truly compassionate and skilled team. Every nurse and doctor we encountered treated both of us with patience, kindness, and reassurance during a very overwhelming time for a new mom. After 25 days in the NICU, my son was able to come home healthy. I can’t thank the NICU staff at Crouse enough for the care they gave my baby and the support they gave me throughout our stay."

Congratulations to our most recent DAISY Award recipient, Melissa Stephens, RN - OB Float Pool. Melissa was nominated by a grateful patient. The nomination read:

"Melissa's swift clinical judgment, calm demeanor, and deep compassion made an unforgettable impact on one of the most important—and most frightening—days of our lives. Even five weeks later, her presence is still vivid in my mind, and I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the role she played in the safe arrival of our baby girl.
Our labor had already stretched over 25 hours when Melissa’s shift began. It was as if the stars aligned when she walked into the room. She told me it was okay to cry and worry. As a mom herself, she understood, and that acknowledgment meant everything.

After our daughter was delivered, I experienced my own complications and lost consciousness. During those hours I couldn’t be present, Melissa was there—not only for me, but for my partner. She ensured him I was in capable hands, supported him in those precious first moments with our newborn, and reminded him to take photos so I wouldn’t miss them completely.

Melissa Stephens is the kind of nurse every patient hopes for—clinically astute, deeply compassionate, and unshakably calm in a crisis. She kept me grounded in chaos, held space for our emotions, and ensured we felt safe and seen in one of the most vulnerable times of our lives. Melissa, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. You are an earthly angel, and will always be remembered!"
