Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital offers a full spectrum of primary and specialized medical care for pediatric patients. Our dedicated pediatric staff care for patients, in an inpatient setting, that consists of General Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgical Unit, hematology/oncology, the only pediatric intensive care unit in a 17-county referral area, and the only dedicated pediatric Emergency Department between Rochester and Vermont. As the region's only Level I trauma and burn center, Upstate offers a complete range of health care services for children from birth to 19 years of age.

With services like genetic testing, counseling, pharmacogenomics, social work, and even the ketogenic diet, families receive truly comprehensive support. Patients also enjoy a seamless transition to Adult Neurology at age 18, ensuring continuous, trusted care.

Led by Dr. Irene Cherrick and Sara Fisher, PNP, this team walks alongside children with medical complexity and their families—providing pain and symptom management, advocacy, emotional support, and care coordination.

They help children live as long as possible, as well as possible, while supporting families through every step of their child’s journey, including decisions around life-sustaining treatments and end-of-life care.

From prenatal support to NICUs, inpatient care, telemedicine and home visits, the CHOICES team ensures families never have to face these challenges alone 💙

Next we’re spotlighting the Upstate Pediatric Trauma Program at Upstate Golisano!

Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital's Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center is a vital resource for Central New York, serving the pediatric community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Upstate is one of only eight Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Centers in New York State. The Upstate Pediatric Trauma Team provides expert care for injured children from birth up to fourteen years of age.

The Pediatric Trauma Program consists of personnel with highly specialized roles and distinct skill sets who collaborate and communicate with clinical services within the hospital. This ensures that all standards are met to remain verified as an American College of Surgeons Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.

Each member plays a unique role in making sure that all injured children in the Central New York region receive the highest level of care!

September is National Newborn Screening Awareness Month—a time to recognize the importance of this life-saving test that can detect more than 50 disorders in newborns, many of them metabolic diseases.

When a child is diagnosed, the Inherited Metabolic Diseases Specialty Center at Upstate provides expert, multidisciplinary care to help families manage inborn errors of metabolism and support children in living healthy, full lives.

As we celebrate 16 years of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, we’re excited to highlight the Child Life Department!

This amazing team provides emotional and psychosocial support to children and families, helping them cope with illness, hospitalization, and medical procedures.

Child Life is everywhere—covering inpatient units, the PICU, emergency department, radiology, surgery center, cancer center, Joslin Center, The Clark Burn Center, children of adult patients, and our outpatient pediatric and adolescent center. 🌟

With a full-time art therapist, music therapist, and gaming/technology specialist, they bring creativity, comfort, and fun into care.

Through events, programming, and everyday moments, the Child Life team creates joy, connection, and normalization—helping families feel supported and making hospital visits more positive and memorable.

Next we’re shining a light on the incredible pediatric volunteers at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital!

Every week, around 30 volunteers dedicate over 100 hours to supporting patients, families, and our care teams—that’s more than 5,000 hours each year! From bringing joy to kids, giving respite to caregivers, and assisting the Child Life team, our volunteers are an essential part of the Golisano family.

They are aspiring doctors, nurses, and child life specialists learning what it means to care. They are working professionals giving their evenings and weekends. They are retired teachers, lawyers, and business owners sharing wisdom and compassion.

No matter their background, all of our volunteers have one thing in common: a commitment to making a difference in the lives of children and families.
