Knowing the signs of executive functioning challenges can help us focus on crucial skills to build on. These are just a few of the most common challenges that may arise during daily interactions. Practicing these skills while our learners are happy and relaxed can help reduce distress during strenuous activities.

Executive functions; what are they, and why do we need them? Executive functions are at the core of an individual’s ability to process information and apply it in a meaningful way. Many individuals have deficits in one or many of these categories. Executive functions branch out into nearly all facets of human interactions and can be applied to most situations. Having a firm foundation can reduce challenging behavior and allow for new skills to be learned in place of behaviors that may be causing an individual distress. Some ways we can help our learners at home include; leading by example, label emotions during daily interactions, practicing memory recall, giving opportunities for choice when leaving a preferred activity. The more opportunities for practice, the stronger these skills become!

The CDC has just updated the prevelancy of autism rates in the US. 1 in 36 children are now receiving a diagnosis of autism; up from 1 in 44.
