We provide quality ABA therapy by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst in home, Clinic, school, and community settings for all ages throughout Western Washington.

As part of Bright Star Behavior Services, it is the responsibility of the BCBA to conduct various descriptive and systematic behavioral assessments (e.g., functional analyses) and skill-based assessments (e.g., ABLLS-R, VB-MAPP, AFLS, etc.). The BCBA then provides behavior analytic interpretations of the results and designs comprehensive ABA treatment plans based off of evidence-based practices and behavior analytic research literature. The BCBA provides direct therapy to the clients and in some cases training and supervision to Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts, Registered Behavior Technicians, and other responsible parties tasked with the implementation of behavior analytic interventions. The BCBA then supervises and monitors treatment progress of a client through data-based progress monitoring. The BCBA also provides training to parents/guardians and other responsible parties for the client.

April is autism awareness month. Since I have two autistic boys, it’s my job to spread awareness every day, not just in April.

This is my son, Greyson, a couple of days after he was diagnosed with autism.

I want to tell that little boy- I’m so sorry I made your autism about ME. I thought when you didn’t listen to me, I was a bad parent. I lost my patience with you. I was mad at you for screaming, instead of using your words. I was sad that when we went to the playground- you didn’t want to play with other kids- you just tried to run as fast as you could, far from the playground. I was mad that you were picky about what you ate. Hurt you didn’t look up when I would come home and walk in the room.

And I am so sorry. Your autism isn’t about me. It’s about me supporting and celebrating you. You wanted to run in playgrounds and parking lots because it felt so good to you to run free like that. Your fun didn’t look like others fun. That must have been confusing for you. (Why are those kids playing on that stupid contraption when running is so fun?!) You screamed instead of using your words because you couldn’t talk. Not being able to talk is harder on you in ways a speaking individual could never understand. I know better now.

When you were three, I had so much to learn about parenting. I still do, because there’s nothing more important to me in the world than being yours and Parker’s mom, and I want to be good at it. Thank you for being patient with me. The truth is, you are absolute perfection, exactly the way you are. You teach me a new way of thinking and being.

Autism acceptance is often a process. And if we want the world to celebrate and accept our children- than we must too.

Turns out it’s not my boys that needed changing, it was me. ( )

In an ironic twist of timing, yesterday I had to pick up paperwork from my son’s doctor that will be filed with the court for his guardianship as he will be turning 18 very, very, soon.

This month social media newsfeeds will be flooded with memes and feel good stories about autism. Most of which will be about little cute kids.

But what about the adults? All the meme sharing in the world isn’t going to get my son a meaningful job, healthcare, and support services.

It means nothing to share the latest viral feel good story if the person sharing it isn’t aware or doesn’t care what their local and or state representatives think and do for autism and the disable community at large.

So we need to be LOUD about it. Inclusion matters. At any and every age.

At Bright Star Behavior Services, our behavior technicians are professionals who have completed a minimum of a 40-hour intensive training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), have successfully passed a competency assessment administered by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and received a passing score on the Registered Behavior Technician exam through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board in order to become a Registered Behavior Technician. All behavior technicians are continually supervised by an agency BCBA on a weekly basis and engage in behavior analytic professional development activities. Behavior technicians are responsible for the direct implementation of skill-acquisition and behavior-reduction plans developed by the BCBA. The behavior technician is not responsible for the designing of interventions, conducting in-depth assessments, or developing skill acquis ion or behavior reduction plans.
